Schefter On Saints, Rams, Trumaine Johnson

    https://www.profootballrumors.com/2017/04/trumaine-johnson-rams-saints

Adam Schefter of ESPN.com has published his final notebook before the draft. Here’s a quick look at the highlights:

A few weeks ago, the Saints were willing to trade what was thought to be a second-round pick to the Rams for franchise tendered cornerback Trumaine Johnson. However, Johnson was unwilling to sign a long-term deal with New Orleans because of his desire to remain in L.A. The Rams have pivoted away from Johnson trade talk, but Schefter wonders aloud if a team could gamble by trading for him without a long-term pact in place. Personally, I can’t imagine a scenario in which a team is willing to give up significant draft capital to the Rams without a multi-year contract for Johnson. It’s also hard to see the Rams settling for, say, a mid-round pick. It’s hard to see Johnson playing anywhere other than L.A. in 2017.

I would rather have let Johnson go to free agency this year. Now he try to get a contract with LA or go to free agency next year. Either way, I am drafting CBs in this draft.

Tru was tagged twice, so the Rams clearly want him. If Tru wants a long term deal to stay in LA like he says he does, why has it been so hard to do? Maybe he gets traded during the draft?

The problem, though, is that Tru is positioned to have say in this.

Nobody is going to trade for him with the tag still on, so what they will do instead is set up a longterm deal before a trade, and if that process works, the acquiring (or interested) team can pull the trigger.

But…that means Tru has to sign off on the trade. He has the power to say “no I will not do a longterm deal with this team.” That means, in essence, that he calls the trade off himself.

So it’s not a normal trade situation.
