NFL executives, coaches and scouts voted Kupp the fifth-best receiver in football this year, according to ESPN, with one scout even comparing him to Hines Ward.

After pushing for last summer’s top spot coming off a historic season and Super Bowl run, Kupp missed nine games with an ankle injury and fell three spots.

But the Rams’ losing season didn’t zap his ability to produce at a high level. His 75 receptions in nine games set a pace of 142 over a full 17-game season. Since becoming a full-time starter in 2018, Kupp is tied for first with Keenan Allen with 1.83 receptions per game and first in yards after catch per game (14.45) on third downs.

The biggest difference was yards per catch, though. His average decreased from 13.4 in 2011 to 10.8 last season.

“You can teach tape on him attacking leverage, stemming guys, great quickness, precise route runner,” an NFC scout said. “Also does the blocking and dirty work. He’s a bit like Hines Ward, in his value is in doing all the little things really well.”

An AFC executive added: “If I’m picking one receiver for one game, I might pick him. He’s going to win the game for you.”

    Benoit, from: https://www.the33rdteam.com/category/rankings/nfl-9-best-route-runners-2023-cooper-kupp-justin-jefferson/

    2. Cooper Kupp, Los Angeles Rams

Mentally, few players have a scholarly understanding of how a defense’s coverage concept and matchup rules relate to the overall design of the play. Physically, few players are as nuanced with body lean as Cooper Kupp – especially on short and intermediate routes. And while Kupp certainly can separate from defenders dramatically, he’s arguably at his most unguardable when aiming to separate just enough.

Some of his best “contested catches” are a product of subtle, supremely timed route-running excellence. At the top of his routes, he’s peerless when it comes to friendlily presenting himself to the quarterback.

Matt Stafford, not in the best 100 players in the NFL.

The oversight is truly weird. Stafford is a guy with career #s that place him among the all-time greats, he plays in the 2nd-largest media market, and won a Super Bowl a year ago, and nobody seems to think he’s any good.

I can’t account for it in any way other than recency bias.

Yeah. But then…he was in Detroit for so long, and many people would overlook the context and just say so why doesn’t he win? And last year, like many similar years before, I would encounter people who just couldn’t factor OL injuries into qb play. (Plus MS was banged up from the get-go last year.)

Plus, have we ever seen the NFL so full of so many promising young qbs? Mahomes, Burrow, Lawrence, Hurts, Herbert, Allen, Watson. So Matt becomes “oh yeah and Stafford, but he only won in the playoffs one season.” Overlooked city. I hope he’s a proud, shoulder-chippy kind of guy.

He’s 35 now, can he play 3 more seasons?

Kurt played till he was 38. Favre played one more year too many but he  was still effective at 40. Rivers’ last season he was still effective at 39. Rodgers is 39. Brady is the gold standard (played till 45) but that’s too surreal a comparison. It’s obviously a combo of things–advances in sports medicine, in training, in diet and nutrition (eg. getting individualized bloodwork for nutrition).
