This is looking like “Draft Day.”
April 14, 2016 at 5:49 pm #41909bnwBlockedWould the Rams have preferred to get their QB in the third round? Absolutely. But it is like a lottery ticket, right? How many third round QBs have been picked in the last 15 years? How many have become Russell Wilson? Can it be done? Yes. Is it something that you can plan on? Probably not. Its not a perfect solution, but if they are right the cost is insignificant. If they are wrong, well, maybe those same draft picks would have been wrong too. Let’s hope they choose wisely and the QB becomes the next Big Ben or even Phillip Rivers.

Well the important thing iz,
I wont have to wait around for two hours on draft night
waiting for the Rams pick.People need to factor that in,
i think.w
vYes indeed. Thats the most salient analysis in this thread! The Rams are on the clock!
The upside to being a Rams fan is heartbreak.

April 14, 2016 at 6:14 pm #41910znModeratorWhat if Mannion outplays the rookie QB
in preseason? It would be a best case scenario.
First, it would be no shock if a 1-year vet outplayed a rookie.
Second, a team with 2 viable young qbs? Dream come true. They let the rookie sit and learn, play the more experienced qb, then trade him in 2017.
What would be not to like?
April 14, 2016 at 6:27 pm #41911znModeratorWV: he was drafted in the Third round. The seahawks
didnt give up a gazzilion premium picks for him.
They just chose wisely in the third round.Seattle knew the odds on a 3rd round pick at qb working out. That’s why they spent all that guaranteed money signing Flynn as a FA. So, same as Brady at 6, or Warner for nothing…it’s part luck with Wilson.
Odds on hitting a 3rd round qb? I will look at 20 years, 94 to 2013 (to 2013 cause that’s far enough back to know).
In that period, 24 qbs were taken in the 3rd round. Of those, I count only Schaub and Wilson as hits (Foles, I can’t bring myself to count…he fell apart too early in his career).
So that’s 2 out of 24. 8.3%.
How about qbs picked 1st in round 1? Going back 40 years, to 74.
I count 18 total picked. I count 4 misses out of 18 — Couch, Vick (though that one’s complicated), Carr, and Russel. So it’s 77.8% hits.
That’s 8.3% v. 77.8%.
I’ll take those odds.

Are you MAD.After having no Healthy-Franchise-QB
elevating the team for all these years,
they go and find themselves with TWO,
all at once.It would be a confusing distraction.
Plus, it might cause unconscionable frictions
and factions. Just like on Game of Thrones.Do you even understand Football?

vApril 14, 2016 at 6:33 pm #41913ZooeyModeratorHorrible trade. Here’s why…
1. They gut the better part of two drafts to take one unproven rookie and if it’s Wentz, a rookie that for all intents and purposes played against minor league college competition. He also ran the read option in college and, I’m guessing here, was not trained to read a defense. Most QBs coming out of college these days are similarly challenged.
2. The future…they’ll be paying the price for up to six years. Players taken this year and next would be the nucleus of the team five years down the road. This team will be dependent on expensive free agents or other teams cast offs to fill out the roster in the coming years. And we’ve seen that scenario play out in the recent past. Didn’t work out too well.
3.There is no one on Fisher’s staff that can up-coach this kid and have him ready to play in Game one, or build a game plan where he can succeed right away, in my opinion. And this QB WILL start no matter what. And what of Mannion? They never even gave that kid a chance.
This is a fucking disaster of epic proportions. A desperation move if I ever saw one.
Yes, if they draft a QB that doesn’t work out, they are screwed. For years.
April 14, 2016 at 6:47 pm #41917sdramParticipantI’m questioning this deal – I think that fourth the Rams got from the Titans should have been a higher fourth or two fourths – that would be one higher fourth or one half. But, I may be confused about the importance of the value of fourth half picks.
I like the splash – two firsts. I believe that was the same deal the Rams made for Dickerson – two 1’s, two 2’s and two 3’s – say that two four times fast. Who won that deal? Seems like nobody at this point as I recall.
I like Wentz – lots of hard headed German folks in and from North Dakota. Athletic.
I like Goff too – big time prospect.
This ain’t no Peyton vs dumbass situation from what I can tell.

Ramsey…
For those of you who are upset that we sold the FARM for “THE ARM” , think upon this…
Since Terry Bradshaw was drafted #1 in 1970, 21 QB’s have been drafted with the first pick of the draft. Let’s take a quick peek at those 21 QB’s.
16 out 21 of these #1 drafted QB’s were ALL Pro. So, If the past predicts the future, then the odds of the Ram’s drafting a future ALL Pro QB are 76%! So many Superbowl appearances.
16 Superbowl Championships!
The odds of a pedestrian QB taking a team to the Superbowl are extremely low.
No matter what, the most expensive position ‘QB” will be CHEAP for 5 years, thus allowing the Rams to substitute free agency signings for our missed drafted picks. I’m not a big fan of free agency, but I got a feeling we will sign a major wide receiver within a year or two.
The majority of our young roster is on the fringe of their prime years, and now we will have a franchise QB to Our Rams into the playoffs and beyond.

Disagree strongly with that one.
I don’t buy into the arguments that this is some retrograde, backwards coaching staff.
I think the fact they went 7-9 with a young plus injured up OL and a melted down qb is testimony to how much better this staff is than many seem to think.
I think he’s right about the read option QBs and the lack of success NFL staffs have had at getting them to warrant a high pick status. Rams staff couldn’t even get Foles out of his funk. Perhaps like someone wrote earlier the Snisher has more trading in mind? Perhaps for a proven NFL QB?

Yeah but this years draft is supposedly light in QB talent making the choice more risky.

April 14, 2016 at 7:49 pm #41925znModeratorYeah but this years draft is supposedly light in QB talent making the choice more risky.
No, no one said it was light in talent at qb. That’s next year. If anything, there;s more qb talent in this draft than most.
And to make a genuine comparison, you would have to go back to all the previous years where qbs were taken first and compare the talent levels at the position.
As it stands, there are 3, possibly 4, 1st round prospects at qb this draft. In 2010, there was only 1—Bradford.
What they DID say is that there is no one at the Luck level in this draft. Which is fine…a franchise qb is not the same as an elite qb. There are always more of the former per decade than of the latter.
So there’s at least 4 possible franchise qbs in this draft, including Goff and Wentz prominently among them.

No, no one said it was light in talent at qb. That’s next year.
Thats not what I’ve seen. From a scout on NFL.com:
“There is talent there, but it’s marginal,” said the scout on the quarterback class of 2016. “They’ve all been inflated by the fact they know how to work out at the combine, but the tape isn’t really all that impressive to me. Not a single one who makes you go, ‘Wow.’ The best teams can hope for is that one of these guys becomes Trent Dilfer.”
While there’s a chance the reference was leaning toward the Super Bowl winning Trent Dilfer, it’s much more likely that a journeyman with a career completion percentage of 55.5 was the version of Dilfer on the scout’s mind.
Again on NFL.com:
“I’d hate to be a team in need of a quarterback. The best two in this draft might end up being from Memphis and North Dakota State and that ought to scare the (expletive) out of you. It takes some courage to turn that card in.” — NFC scout
From sbnation.com:
Now that the NFL season is a quarter of the way finished, we’re starting to see some obvious trends in regards to the 2016 NFL Draft. The most immediate takeaway is that a lot of NFL teams need a quarterback, and it doesn’t look like they’ll be available in the draft.
Because of that, we could see another draft where quarterbacks go too high, like in 2011 where Jake Locker, Blaine Gabbert and Christian Ponder were all taken too high instead of more highly rated players at other positions. Like Cam Newton in 2011, there appears to be a lone standout quarterback in California’s Jared Goff.
There’s more but you get the gist. I see you later added to your post of only one sentence. Still doesn’t affect what I posted. No one is claiming 4 franchise QBs in this draft at this time that I’ve seen. It is silly season to be sure but that is over the top. If it turns out to be true I hope the Rams get the best of the bunch.

That’s one view out of MANY. The consensus I see after reading (and posting) MANY views is that there are 2 and possibly 3 good franchise level qbs this year, and maybe even 4.
You can’t be selective with these things. Read up to about 2 dozen different assessments. The idea that this year is light at qb is not the consensus. And others will back me up on this.

I stand by silly season and hope I’m proven wrong. There is a whole industry devoted to silly season so inflation of talent, especially QB could be rampant but I don’t sense that at all. Looks like a ho-hum bunch at QB at best.

April 14, 2016 at 8:35 pm #41931bnwBlockedFrom Wagoner’s column:
Unlike in 2012 when Andrew Luck was a safe bet for the Indianapolis Colts with the top pick or even last year when Jameis Winston and Marcus Mariota came with major NFL pedigrees and reputations as franchise building blocks, both Goff and Wentz head toward this draft with their share of question marks.
Carson Wentz and Jared Goff
The Rams’ move up to No. 1 indicates they believe Carson Wentz or Jared Goff can be a franchise quarterback.
Wentz played at FCS North Dakota State, leaving some to wonder if his performance will decline when facing top competition. Goff is a little smaller but comes from an “Air Raid” offense that didn’t ask him to handle NFL progressions.Less than stellar comments about both Wentz and Goff. No warm and fuzzy feeling comes across. I worry that it could be a desperation move by Snisher minus the bonus draft picks of the Foles trade.
The upside to being a Rams fan is heartbreak.
