from PFF NFL tight end rankings: All 32 units entering the 2020 NFL season
    https://www.pff.com/news/nfl-tight-end-rankings-all-32-units-entering-the-2020-nfl-season

    5. LOS ANGELES RAMS

The tight ends became a huge part of the Rams’ passing attack last season, finishing with 1,168 receiving yards, fifth-most of any tight end group in the league.

Tyler Higbee broke out to produce the third-best receiving grade among tight ends (90.1) while catching over 80% of his targets and averaging 5.8 yards after the catch per reception. Gerald Everett finished with the ninth-best receiving grade (78.9), making the duo the only teammates to rank within the top 10. Everett is also one of the most elusive tight ends in the league, as he forced 13 missed tackles on just 37 receptions last season.

Johnny Mundt played 170 snaps for the Rams, as well, doing his best work in the run game where his 72.4 grade ranked seventh among tight ends. The Rams also added Brycen Hopkins to the mix this offseason, and the fourth-rounder adds even more speed to the unit — he was the best vertical tight end threat in the 2020 NFL Draft, and he ran a 4.66 at the scouting combine.

Hopkins is more of a big slot receiver with “move” tight end potential, but he adds a nice depth and is more of a long-term play. The Rams have one of the best pass-catching tight end units in the league, and they may be called upon even more given the team’s uncertainty at the outside wide receiver position.

We probably keep 4 TEs given likelihood of more 12 sets. Higs/Everett/Mundt are probably set in stone because all offer good things. Higs will get a lot of earlier reads by the QB this year I think as a result of how he played down the stretch.

Mundt is coming for Everett’s pudding cup. Lot of folks probably find that unlikely or even impossible, but Mundt has shown significant development in blocking and there is a good chance the Rams use that 12 personnel to dictate the run game in 2020. I don’t think people realize how involved Mundt was blocking nor how good he is at it. Which is really what we need when we go to 12 sets. It’s not really necessary to put Mundt in the pattern as we have Higs for that. Mundt might get some backfield looks if they elect to use a lead blocker which might happen if the line struggles early.

Everett’s not a bad blocker btw, but in terms of consistency the Rams need to lessen penetration in their run scheme and Everett isn’t nearly as good as Mundt at playing a flex role, blocking between the tackles, pulling, etc. Everett will need to redouble his efforts on the blocking side to give himself the best chance to hold onto that TE2 role.

And btw… I would love to see Everett have a Pro Bowl season in 2020. That would be amazing for us. Just don’t think it’s gonna happen.

Tyler Higbee led all players in receiving yards during the last 5 weeks of 2019

    ==

ME: Just some details. Higbee has shown that he is a top receiver. He also has the highest catch percentage of any Ram with more than 40 targets, at 77.5%. Kupp is 2nd at 70.1%. Among league TEs with 40 or more targets TH’s catch percentage ranks 2nd only to Kittle. Among all league WRs and TEs combined with 40 or more targets he ranks 3rd (behind Kittle and Michael Thomas).

For a bit there last week there was a rumor that Everett might be traded. It looks like they’re keeping him. The trade talk might not have been anything real.

Everett is a bit of mystery, not because he hasn’t come through, but because he keeps getting banged up…and that’s on top of being a developmental guy when they picked him. TEs are notoriously slow to develop, and getting banged up on top of it doesn’t help.

So who and what is he? Well the team has a far better idea than we do…we are mostly still just guessing at this point. He shows flashes but can’t stay on the field. For example at one point midseason last year he was becoming a primary target. Starting with the Tampa game and going through to the Pittsburgh game, he had 49 targets in 6 starts. That’s a bit inconsistent–in 2 of those games he had 20+ snaps, when in the other 4 he had 50+ snaps a game–but still, that shows the intention to use him. That was for 26 catches and 322 yards. 8 targets a game for 16 games would have been 128 targets, which would have ranked 3rd among TEs in 2019.

But then he banged his knee up.

Before the injury though, I don’t think they put him in that position if they don’t believe in him. (In fact in a recent interview McVay said he thinks GE is a “rising star.”)

Plus they need 3 viable TEs, though all three top TEs are very different animals (obviously, Higbee, Mundt, Everett). There are different offensive games built around which pair you put out there–HIgbee and Everett is one thing, Higbee and Mundt is another. That’s something a good offensive mind can play around with.

(Hopkins is a very developmental rookie and as was said, rookie TEs rarely do much.)

Everett is more of a move TE and not an inline blocker, though he can block in his role.

He needs to stay healthy and it’s true that so far he has not managed to do that.

I doubt they extend him. Hopkins could replace him in 2021. I doubt they extend him because they can only afford so many extensions. So I would say he looks to be good enough to use effectively in 2020 (if there’s a season), but he’s not a transcendent, must-keep kinda player. (Not many are.)

Higbee is clearly the #1 TE but they can do things with Higbee + Everett packages, or just with Everett out there as the only TE in what amounts to a 4 WR set (with GE being the 4th WR). A 6’3 240 TE in that situation gives you obvious mismatch advantages.

He’s also great after the catch. That’s always been true though other parts of his game had to develop. I think he has enough to be a factor in 2020.

    Or…they could trade him. 😎

    from top 10 tight ends
    https://www.nfl.com/news/2020-nfl-season-49ers-george-kittle-headlines-top-10-tight-ends

    Rank 8
    Tyler Higbee
Los Angeles Rams · Age 27
Higbee is an underrated player at the position, but is coming off a career year with 69 receptions for 734 yards and three TDs. His role and production have grown as he’s become a more integral player in Sean McVay’s offense, and I see that continuing to be the case this year if the Rams aim to return to 2018 form. The fifth-year tight end has great spatial awareness against zone defenses, making him a prime target for Jared Goff.
