Posted May 4, 2016
Myles Simmons Rams Insider @MylesASimmons
After picking up six players through the draft, the Rams have signed 19 rookie free agents to their roster.
Each year, at least a few UDFAs end up on either the roster or practice squad. Last year, running back Malcolm Brown, defensive lineman Matt Longacre, linebacker Cameron Lynch, wide receiver Bradley Marquez, and offensive lineman Darrell Williams all received playing time during the regular season.
Check out the full list of players below, and be sure to stay plugged in to all of our offseason coverage at therams.com.
————————
Taylor Bertolet | K | Texas A&M
Bertolet was a second-team All-SEC selection after making 22 of his 31 field goals in 2015. He tied a conference record by making six field goals in a contest against Vanderbilt.
Brandon Chubb | LB | Wake Forest
Chubb led Wake Forest with 107 tackles in 2015, earning first-team All-ACC honors. He was a two-time captain, having served in the role in both 2014 and 2015.
Morgan Fox | DE | Colorado State-Pueblo
Fox ranked second in Division-II in both sacks (17.0) and tackles for loss (21.5) in 2015. All told, he recorded 36 sacks — a program record — and 49.5 TFLs in his college career.
Rohan Gaines | S | Arkansas
Gaines finished third on the team with 67 tackles in 2015, also recording 1.5 tackles for loss, an interception, and a pass breakup. He was a four-year starter at Arkansas, racking up 39 starts in 46 career games.
Aaron Green | RB | TCU
Green set a single-season program record by rushing for 1,272 yards at TCU in 2015. He averaged 7.1 yards per carry as a junior in 2014, earning second-team All-Big 12 honors.
Nicholas Grigsby | LB | Pitt
Grigsby earned third-team All-ACC honors after raking up 66 tackles — 9.5 for loss — and 3.5 sacks last year. He was also voted as a captain to represent special teams in 2014, the only non-senior in the four-man group.
Darreon Herring | LB | Vanderbilt
Herring was a three-year starter at Vanderbilt, ending his career with 226 total tackles. A captain in 2015, Herring finished second on the team with 64 tackles, adding 3.5 TFLs, 1.5 sacks, and three passes defensed.
Michael Jordan | DB | Missouri Western
Jordan played at both cornerback and safety during his time at Missouri Western, ending his career No. 2 in program history with 16 interceptions — five of which came in 2015. He also finished second in the nation with 22 passes defensed last year.
Cory Littleton | LB | Washington
Littleton earned honorable mention All-Pac 12 status in 2015 for his 65 tackles — 11 for loss — and 6.0 sacks. The 6-foot-3, 238-pound outside linebacker was also a heavy contributor on special teams in his time at Washington, having recorded 19 tackles for the unit.
Jordan Lomax | FS | Iowa
A converted cornerback, Lomax was a third-team All-Big Ten selection after recording 96 tackles, six pass breakups, and one interception in 2015. He ran a 4.62 40-yard dash at his pro day.
Paul McRoberts | WR | Southeast Missouri St.
McRoberts was a first-team All-Ohio Valley Conference selection after recording 76 receptions for 940 yards and nine touchdowns. He established a new program record with 29 career touchdown catches.
Pace Murphy | OL | Northwestern St.
Murphy started 31 games at offensive tackle at Northwestern St., becoming a two-time All-Southland Conference selection in the process.
Marquez North | WR | Tennessee
North’s 2015 season was marred by injury — he made only six receptions for 58 yards in five games — but he elected to enter the league regardless. The 6-foot-2, 223-pound wideout ran a 4.48 40 time at the NFL Combine in February.
Kache Palacio | LB | Washington St.
Palacio played in all 13 games for the Cougars in 2015, tallying 32 tackles — 10.0 for loss — with 5.0 sacks and two forced fumbles. In his WSU career, he recorded 26 TFLs, 17 sacks, and eight forced fumbles.
Brian Randolph | S | Tennessee
Randolph started 47 games at Tennessee, including all 13 contests at free safety in 2015. He finished second on the team with 70 tackles, adding five passes defensed, two interceptions, and a forced fumble.
Winston Rose | CB | New Mexico State
Rose played two years at Los Angeles Valley College before transferring to New Mexico State. The 5-foot-11 cornerback is an Inglewood native and apparently clocked a 4.38 40-time at his pro day.
Ian Seau | DE | Nevada
Seau recorded 10.0 sacks — which led the Mountain West 10.0 — and 18.5 tackles for loss in 2015, earning first-team all-conference honors. He is the nephew of Hall of Famer Junior Seau.
Nelson Spruce | WR | Colorado
Spruce finished his college career as the Pac 12’s all-time leader in receptions with 294. He made 106 catches for 1,198 yards and 12 touchdowns in 2014, following that up with 89 receptions for 1,053 yards and four touchdowns in 2015 to earn second-team All-Pac 12 honors. He’s also sure handed, having dropped only three passes over 288 targets, according to nfl.com.
Jordan Swindle | OL | Kentucky
Swindle was a three-year starter for the Wildcats, starting at right tackle for his sophomore and junior years before moving over to the left side for his senior year in 2015.
Additionally, the Rams will host WR Jimmy Worton and LS Jeffrey Overbaugh on a tryout basis this weekend.
Still 91 names for 90 spots. The official site lists 92 names, but one is Welker. I will post a roster when I have the odd name deciphered.
Rams just updated their roster. Correct count 90. Difference, it appears Trey Watts is no longer a Ram and Bailey is off the NFI list.

Green was the best pass blocking RB in the nation according to PFF. Didn’t give up 1 pressure.
April 30, 2016 at 8:42 pm #43072znModeratorTCU RB Aaron Green signs with the #Rams
PLAYER OVERVIEW
Green arrived at Nebraska in 2011 as a top high school recruit, but with a crowded running back depth chart led by Rex Burkhead and Ameer Abdullah, He elected to transfer.
Green chose TCU over Baylor, Oklahoma and Texas Tech, sitting out the 2012 season due to transfer rules. He stepped into the starter role as a junior with a team-high 922 yards and nine scores, earning second team All-Big 12 honors. Green had his bests season in 2015 as a senior (10 starts) with a career-high 1,272 rushing yards and 11 touchdowns, earning All-Big 12 Honorable Mention honors.STRENGTHS WEAKNESSES
STRENGTHS: Balanced athlete and light on his feet to make sharp lateral cuts, creating with ankle-breaking jukes. Shifty movements and open-field wiggle to explode north-south. Easy acceleration to burst away from defenders in space. Natural run instincts to read blocks and usually has a plan at the line of scrimmage. Runs tough and keep his legs churning, fighting for every yard.
Focused receiver with reliable hands, often lining up in the slot. Has the chops to at least make an effort in pass protection. Only three fumbles in his career. Driven individual and well-respected by people around the program (“phenomenal young man”).
WEAKNESSES: Lacks an ideal build for the position and his frame doesn’t have the growth potential to get much bigger. Runs with minimal power and is limited as an inside runner. Tunnel vision at times and gets bounce happy, dancing and taking too many steps in the backfield.
Needs to take what is blocked for him instead of trying to create on his own. Bad habit of stopping his feet and won’t pick up yards after initial contact, too easily taken down by finger-tip tackles. Doesn’t have elite downfield speed and can be caught from behind.
Route-running and field sense need improved. Steps up as a blocker, but too easily knocked off his feet. Ball security needs improved, holding the ball too loose.
IN OUR VIEW: Green has video game-like cuts, making quick reads and reacting with his feet to keep defenders off-balance, but he needs space to be effective. He isn’t a strong between-the-tackles runner and struggles with congestion, not consistently trusting his vision or allowing blocks to develop. Green is quicker than fast with the athleticism to create on his own as a runner or receiver, but his lack of run power will limit his role in the NFL.

That is 16. Fisher said they would sign 18 – 20.
That adds up to 89 by my count, not counting Whitner. Of course they can delete players if they want to add more. The roster limit is 90.
I think we can add Ian Seau DE Nevada

some thought on the UDFAs
Taylor Bertolet, K, Texas A&M – he kicks footballs
Nicholas Gribsby, LB, Pittsburgh – undersized Barron type.
Brandon Chubb, LB, Wake Forest – tackling machine at MLB, his cousin is Nick Chubb the Georgia RB.
Kache Palacio, LB/FB, Washington State – Rams worked him out. Was a LBer,
Corey Littleton. LB. Washington – Rams had early interest in him. 6′-3″ 238 lb OLB/Edge Rush tweener. Too small to be a edge rusher, but with only 1 year as a OLB, needs to develop pass cover skills. ST lloks like his calling , at least early on. I like him.
Morgan Fox, DE, Colorado State – actually CSU- Pueblo. Never saw him play.
Michael Jordan, DB, Missouri Western – could be a safety
Brian Randolph, DB, Tennessee – an older Mo Alexander type but a better deep safety.. Strong, fast and a tad stiff. 23 years old. A thumper like Alexander, but Alexander is a bigger all around.
Jordan Lomax, S, Iowa – I mentioned 3 months ago he reminded me of a poor mans Bob Sanders.
Aaron Green, RB, TCU – The anti-Tre Mason. Reliable hands and from what I have read, an respected kid. Lacks power, but has good vision, and is shifty.
Paul McRoberts, WR SE Missouri St. – Another 4.7 guy with excellent hands.
Nelson Spruce, WR, Colorado – 3 months ago I said he was a 6th round pick. His 4.7 40 pretty much ended that. He’s a polished route runner with good hands.
Marquez North, WR, Tennessee – Raw, was injured last year. Size, speed guy at 6′-2″ 225. Doesn’t play that fast. Very willing run blocker.
Winston Rose, CB, New Mexico – do not remember him at all.
Pace Murphy, OL, Northwestern State – didn’t see him
Jordan Swindle, OT, Kentucky – big big kid, decent feet, needs to play with better leverage.

Four year starter from Reading, PA. The former Aggie kicker has been consistently one of the strongest kickoff guys in the country throughout his career. Showing improvement in his ball striking and ability to make kicks has given him a chance of making an NFL team. Shortenin his steps and improving his swing vertically has improved the straightness of his kicks. Bertolet is a hard worker who has overcome a rough start in his career to finish with a solid season of 21/31 on field goals, and one of the top kickoff specialists in the country. Field goal statistics over his career have been up and down but finished his senior season on a high note. Quick hips an powerful leg allow him to create hang times rarely seen. Kick offs have been a strength since day one as he has been the starting kickoff guy at A&M all four years. Has over 150 touchback a in his career including 49 last fall. Three-time Academic all-SEC. Made 5/9 from 50+ yards his senior year and 5/6 from 40-49 yards. The ball jumps off his foot and he brings a lot of energy through contact. His size will scare away some teams. Field goal percentage has not been great, the difference between his A and C ball is wide, cleaning up his consistency in rotation is vital for his improvement. Seventh round/PFA. (A-28, H-8).

PRO DAY 40-YD: 4.56 | 10-YD: 1.59 | BP: 15 | VJ: 37.5 | BJ: 10’07”SUMMARY: A no-star wide receiver recruit out of high school, Jordan had academic issues and wasn’t highly recruited, joining his older brother Reggie Jordan (undrafted tight end in 2014 NFL Draft) at Division-II Missouri Western State. He earned MIAA Freshman of the Year honors in 2012 and started all four seasons for the Griffons, finishing with career-best 22 passes defended and five interceptions as a senior to earn multiple All-American honors. Jordan, who fittingly wears No. 23 jersey, has a fluid lower body with burst off his plant foot to change directions and stay on top of throws, but his high pedal and premature hip-turn allows receivers to create spacing out of breaks. He tends to play too much on his heels and lacks a second gear downfield, leading to grabby hands. Jordan has undeniable career ball production (16 interceptions and 58 passes defended) with natural size and field sense, but he is a cornerback/safety tweener who might be limited by scheme.

After redshirting in 2012 due to a shoulder injury, Lomax a reserve defensive back as a sophomore and started his first game, finishing the 2013 season with five tackles and two passes defended. He moved to free safety as a junior and earned a starting job (12 starts), recording 92 tackles, seven passes defended and one interception to earn Honorable Mention All-Big Ten honors. Lomax started all 14 games as a senior free safety in 2015 and finished third on the team with 96 tackles, adding seven passes defended and one interception to earn Third Team All-Big Ten honors. He accepted his invitation to the 2016 East-West Shrine Game.
STRENGTHS: Excellent play speed…fast angles downhill and pursuit outside, not playing hesitant…fluid footwork and unlocks his hips to turn and run with tight ends and running backs…quick read/react skills to diagnose and attack vs. the run – not distracted by motions and ball fakes…unafraid to throw his body around and arrives at the contact point with authority, always looking to separate man from ball…aggressive take-on strength to bounce off blockers…highly intelligent on and off the field – Academic All-American…extra coach on the field, communicating play indicators – well-respected on campus…desired mental and physical toughness for the position…versatile experience at both cornerback and safety with consistent production the past two seasons.
WEAKNESSES: Undersized frame with short arms and maxed out build…tiny margin of error with his pursuit angles, leading to misses…routinely needs help from the cavalry to finish tackles due to his lack of size and strength – fierce striker, but not a wrap up tackler…overaggressive tendencies with his eyes in the wrong place, allowing plays in the middle of the field…doesn’t have the make up speed to recover after false steps…poor timing and anticipation in coverage, falling for double- moves and attracting penalties…struggles to locate or feel passes once his back is turned to the ball…marginal ballskills with several dropped interceptions on his film…no return experience on special teams…violent play style and lack of size leads to durability concerns – missed the 2012 season due to a torn labrum (July 2012) that required surgery.

and a newish OC.And a new golden-boy-QB.
And a second year star-RB.
And a very young, developing OLine.
Should be inter esting.
I’ll keep saying it btw, cause its my mantra:
It dont matter if the Rams ‘improve’ — they have
to ‘make up ground’ on Seattle and Arizona.

too. So, we’ll see. Should be a LOT of fun

Started 18 games over the past three years. From San Antonio, TX. Started off at Nebraska, backing up Ameer Abdullah. A space-hungry back who excels at being elusive and quick in the open field. Has fluid hips and light feet. Will burst through a crease, easy hop cut and change of direction. Elusive and savvy with good vision. Poor power presence. Will not push the pile and rarely breaks tackles when a defender has a clean look at him. Needs more bulk. Does not put in full effort as a blocker or route runner. He has some ability in space and may be best suited for return duty in the league. Senior Bowl notes: Dances too much in the hole. Doesn’t hit it. Needs to worm on route running. Slows to cut. Needs more bulk and pass blocking effort. He did have a nifty 25-yard touchdown run where he showed his cut back vision. 2015 stats: 1272 yrds, 5.2 ypr, 11 TD, 16 rec, 117 yds, 1 TD. Not invited to Combine. Seventh round/PFA. (A-30, H-8 3/8, BP-DNP, SS-DNP).

That’s for gaining ground on Seattle and Arizona, if Goff can play well in the pros, we gained a ton of ground.

A rookie QB, a rookie TE and a couple rookie WR’s — probably not what you’d want on the field at the same time. Ya know.
It will be interesting to see if Goff can ‘throw open’ guys like Britt and Tavon. And Gurley. The vets.

vyeah. kendricks, austin, britt, and especially gurley should be who goff relies on the most this year. is there enough of a veteran presence to help the rook out?
if goff can come in and do a job like carr did his rookie year. if higbee can replace cook AND be an upgrade. if michael thomas or cooper can be a 3rd or 4th wr and contribute a little. if randolph can grab the starting fs spot. if quinn comes back healthy. if gaines comes back healthy. if ogletree comes back healthy and can make a successful transition. if greg robinson can build on the second half of last year. if gurley comes back stronger and faster than last year.
i think then the rams can gain some ground on the cardinals and seahawks. that’s a lot of ifs though.

The Commodores’ consistent tackler signed with the Rams as an undrafted free agent.Vanderbilt linebacker Darreon Herring is a Los Angeles Ram. He signed a free agent deal with the NFC West team shortly after the conclusion of the 2016 NFL Draft.
The Tennessean’s Adam Sparks confirmed the news early on Sunday morning.
Vandy LB Darreon Herring signs free agent deal with Los Angeles Rams. That's 7 Dores headed to NFL camps.
— Adam Sparks (@AdamSparks) May 1, 2016
Herring recorded 226 career tackles (11 for loss) as a Commodore and was one of the team’s leaders on and off the field. He never missed a game at Vanderbilt, breaking into the team’s defensive rotation as a true freshman and developing into a starter one season later. He’s a versatile defender who can be helpful against both the pass and the run. This seems legit. But, according to my count we already have 90 on the roster. So, we would have to cut somebody to add him, but who?
