It has been talked about last night with Chris Collinsworth, and I just saw it on Colin Cowherd. They said the problem is when you go out and spend all this money on big stars, it limits your depth, and Cowherd went on and said this team is just glitz and glamour, and will never win a Super Bowl. Depth will be the problem, because that is what our Rams will be about.

Well, if you sacrifice depth for stars, then your stars better play like stars.

The biggest problem the Rams have faced is that outside of Aaron Donald, their defensive stars have played like journeymen.

The Rams felt (and I agreed at the time) that they had pretty good depth other than at LB entering the season.

The Rams may not have good depth on the o-line, but the o-line hasn’t been injured. Entering the season nobody figured a healthy o-line would be a weakness for the Rams this season, but that’s what’s starting to happen.

But right now, the Rams look like they need a rebuild. They need help on the d-line, OLB, ILB, CB, Safety and on the o-line.

I think that’s complete bs. Not talking about you talking about Cowherd. I don’t remember Collinsworth saying any of that.

Jack all good teams devote 60% of the cap to the top `10 contracts. That’s what the Rams have done and that’s pretty much what every other contender has done too.

But right now, the Rams look like they need a rebuild. They need help on the d-line, OLB, ILB, CB, Safety and on the o-line.

I don’t see a complete rebuild in store and again–the Rams have not spent a greater percentage on their stars than other contenders have.

They need a CB, LBs, an NT, a free safety, and some more OL.

I would have said the same thing if they won the last 2 games. I would have said the same thing at the start of the season. In fact I probably did say the same thing at the start of the season.

The Rams haven’t spent all that money on big stars. That will happen when they sign Goff. The have about 55% in their top 10 players this year.

That will happen when they sign Goff.

IMO it won’t even happen then. Without signing Goff about 60% of their cap goes to about 10 players. With Goff it will be a total of 8 or 9. But the other 6 or 7 will be different at that point than now.

Teams show all the time that you can pay off your qb with big bucks and still contend. That’s true of the Saints, Seattle, the Chargers, and Steelers for example.

Right now they have no blue players and the top 10 take up 55%. I think Goff will make a difference. You know his fifth year option will be ~$25 million.

I know. So following the formula, instead of 10 players at 60% it will be 8-9 at 60%. But then they will also have a more experienced qb.

On the depth thing the talking heads like Cowherd don’t know with Easely and Fox out during camp and Peterson blows up his ACL in camp obo n breaking his foot in camp and Browns suspension forcing Blyth to start and how many games before Barron played the Rams have had remarkable success with their depth this season when you add Kupp MB and Talib .

Yeah good response to the Cowbird.

Plus both Noteboom and Allen had to go into games a couple of times as short term injury replacements and both did well.

wikipedia: Cowbirds are brood parasites, laying their eggs in the nests of other species. If the cowbird egg is removed, the female cowbird may destroy the host’s eggs to dissuade further removals. This abundant and gregarious bird feeds mainly on insects and some seeds and forages on the ground or perches on cattle.

    Offensive Personnel

They should have cut Natson when they activated Cooper. Natson doesn’t do anything but return punts.

The OL hasn’t looked quite the same of late. Sullivan seems to be hitting a wall this year. I’d like to see if one of the younger guys can step up and handle the job. I’d sub Brian Allen in for Sullivan at Center or sub Noteboom in for Blythe at RG and move Blythe to Center. It might be safer to play Allen because Noteboom is our backup LT. We can’t afford him getting hurt. I recognize there are some risks with a rookie Center, but if Allen offers us quality play there, that could solve a lot of the recent woes we’ve had.

Brown doesn’t have special traits, but he does everything well. There’s a lot of value in that. We’re definitely missing him. I think John Kelly can give us good play if needed. The big problem is he doesn’t seem ready for pass protection.

We should use Gerald Everett on the majority of plays instead of Josh Reynolds. I think Gerald is a bigger mismatch. We basically put teams in a pickle. If they stick with their base defense, we can move Gerald around and treat him like a WR. That will put him 1 on 1 with a LB or force them to drop a safety down to cover him. If they play nickel, that’ll mean having Gerald block a CB 1 on 1. They might also play big nickel with a safety, but again, I think Gerald against a safety 1 on 1 in the running game is a good matchup for us. Gerald still makes a mistake from time to time with his route running (he needs to get better with the instinctual parts of the game, like knowing when to sit down in coverage or knowing what to do with his stem, but he’s a big time athlete who can make tough catches and run after the catch)

Hit Everett, Higbee, Gurley, etc. on those short routes. If you are getting 5 to 7 yards a pop, you’re going to move the ball. Make them come up and defend it. Don’t try to force the issue down the field.

When we got into hurry up situations (before half and in the 4th), we were feasting in the passing game. We need to have that same mindset all the time. If they want to sit back and force us to throw underneath, fine. Let’s just sit there and pick them apart 5-10 yards at a time.

Is Goff elite? Not yet. The last few games have shown that. He’s still a young player who is a few years away from his prime. However, he is a damn good QB with elite potential. I am glad he’s on this team, and I look forward to watching him work through his issues.

I’ll make one final point. A lot of people were worried about Goff’s ability to come through in “clutch moments.” He’s killed that critique this year. I am very sad that Jojo’s boneheaded fumble cost us our real opportunity to make a comeback. Still, Goff managed to drive us down the field even after that and gave us a chance at a game-winning TD. I strongly believe that Goff would have led a game-tying drive if Jojo hadn’t fumbled that ball away.
