I know the Rams haven’t been eliminated from the playoffs yet and I’m not advocating giving up on the season.
But the Rams can’t run the football. That means the Keenum has to shoulder the entire load and he’s not up to the task. That isn’t a knock on him. He simply isn’t that sort of QB. As PA pointed out, he’s a game manager. He doesn’t have the skill-set to carry an offense for extended periods of time.
Goff supposedly has the skills necessary to carry an offense and Fisher has said he is ready to play if called upon. Fisher talks about how much he’s improved since training camp. Reporters at Rams practices are wowed by the throws he makes. Unlike Keenum, Goff’s got a big arm and the accuracy to fit the ball into tight windows. Supposedly his decision making and knowledge of the offense have improved immensely since we last saw him behind center too.
Goff is a rookie and will undoubtedly struggle at times, but right now with the Rams inability to run the ball, maybe he gives them their best shot at winning. Or maybe a rookie QB plus no running game equals total disaster. But it looks more and more like the Rams will not make the playoffs with Keenum as the starter anyway, so why not see what the kid can do?
October 23, 2016 at 5:26 pm #55889wvParticipantWell i was for Goff starting until i heard Fisher say some stuff about the WRs
being the reason for the INTs. I mean Tavon caused one. Looks like Quick may have caused one. I dunno about the other two.But it may be the Keenum and the Rams win that game, if the WRs do their jobs.
So, I dunno. Just depends on what Fisher is seeing in practice. We dunno what Goff is doing in practice.
I’m ok either way. Start him or dont.
I DO know things will be more FUN for me as a fan, when Goff plays.

Lot of discussion of this on this and other boards.
I say three losses is enough…Keenum cant carry a team with (more) iffy (than it should be) defense and with a stalled running game. So might as well drop the rookie out of the helocopter into the atlantic and see if he can swim.
Will they? I think they will. Keenum didnt melt down like Davis then Foles, but, if you can’t win with him might as well get Goff going.

vI didn’t see today’s game but the play of the wide receivers is one of the reasons i thought the switch might work. Quick is finally playing like the guy Fisher and Snead raved about at the combine and Brit is among the league leaders on receiving. I thought their high level of play could smooth the transition to Goff.
October 23, 2016 at 5:46 pm #55893sanbaggerParticipantI think the plan all along was to start Goff’s career after the bye week. Short of the Rams leading the division he was gonna get his shot.
Not sure if he’s ready. Last I saw (pre-season) he didn’t look any where near ready but I have read some reports that he looks great in practice. Well, I look great on the driving range but when I get on the course with my buddies I seem to get away from my training thoughts.
CK could have saved his job but came out and played pretty bad today.
I look forward to seeing Goff…I just hope we don’t see those bone-headed fumbles while trying to make something happen. I didn’t see CK doing anything that Goff can’t do, IMO and he can do things CK just can’t.
October 23, 2016 at 6:24 pm #55902PA RamParticipantI really do like Case–but yes–under the circumstances Goff should start.
The problem for Fisher is he can’t win.
If Goff plays at least as well as Keenum people will call Fisher an idiot for not getting him in there sooner.
If he looks like a train wreck people will really freak out. And Fisher has no where to go from there.
But yes–it’s time. Throw the kid to the sharks. Sink or swim.

When all you see is darkness, light a candle.
For example. If Goff plays as well as Keenum then it’s easy enough to say good, finally…he’s ready. It was wise to let him wait.

The upside to being a Rams fan is heartbreak.

The Atlantic? Let’s at least drop him in the Pacific…give the kid a chance.
October 23, 2016 at 7:23 pm #55913InvaderRamModeratorstart goff. get him ready for next year. assuming of course he’s shown enough in practice. which is what’s been written but who knows what the truth actually is.
personally. i saw glimpses in the preseason. sure i saw a lot of mistakes, but i also saw some drives where he absolutely was throwing strikes. throwing strikes i knew. just knew case could only dream of making. so there’s no reason for me to believe that he hasn’t progressed somewhat beyond some of the what was he trying to do moments.
when the carolina game rolls around it will have been over 2 months since that last preseason game. so unless goff is the next ryan leaf, there’s no reason for me to believe that goff hasn’t put the work in. he seems like a smart enough guy. i’ve seen stuff in the preseason. i’ve read analysts talk about how he was making throws in college no other qb could even attempt.
all rookie qbs are going to struggle. shoot. even second year qbs are going to struggle. guys like manning and brees struggled somewhat. gotta throw him in the fire and let him learn.

October 23, 2016 at 8:16 pm #55922ZooeyModeratorI basically agree with zn on this. Keenum is not capable of more than this. The running game isn’t good. The defense isn’t sacking anybody, or getting turnovers. It’s good, but it isn’t suffocating. It can’t carry the offense. The return game is forgettable. The kicking game is good, but no team makes the playoffs on the strength of their kicker and punter.
Up until now, I had been content to let Goff sit. But this game changed my mind, and that is irrespective of whether Keenum or the WRs were responsible for the INTs. I know one got batted in the air, and the last one appeared to be Quick going to the wrong place. I don’t even remember the other two, and in fact, think I was out of the room when they happened. I have already wiped a lot of the game out of my mind.
But what I see is a team that has shown us what it is. This is it. The trajectory isn’t improving. The Rams offense sucks, and it isn’t getting better. I don’t know if that is the WRs, Keenum, or Boras. But this sucks. They got 10 points today, and got the TD partly because of generous field position.
The Rams have lost to the 49ers, Bills, Lions, and Giants. These are not upper tier football teams. Even forgetting the 49er fiasco, the Rams should have won at least 2 of the last 3 games. This is certainly 7-9 bullshit. And, again, I don’t know what the problem is with the Rams, but the problem for me is that I am sick and tired of 7-9. That is what this season looks like again, so I am ready for just about anything. A new OC, a new QB, get Spruce in there…I don’t care. We are 7 games in, and nothing suggests that this team is moving to the next level.
So bring in Goff. IMO, the season IS lost. Mathematically it isn’t, of course, but the Rams are in a bad spot with tiebreakers, and they aren’t showing that they can take over a football game against ANYBODY. This is not a playoff team.
This team needs an infusion of energy. And maybe Goff provides that, maybe he doesn’t, but Keenum doesn’t, and the team is listless, drifting, and going nowhere. Fuck it. Give me Goff, or I am going to spend my Sundays working around the house, and checking in on the score once in a while. I am sick of watching this shit.
October 23, 2016 at 8:21 pm #55923PA RamParticipantPA RAM: Dammit I broke the eggs! Now what?
ZN: Make scrambled eggs.Absolutely not! I will only eat eggs in the shells. If I can’t have them in the shells I will make the switch to pancakes. Maybe it’s time to turn to pancakes. Trying to pick up the broken shells from that gooey mess never goes well.
But okay–I will stick with the broken shells for now. It isn’t their fault anyway. The pot I was going to boil them in ran the wrong route. I’ll replace the pot before I replace the eggs.

I’m sorry to ruin your pie in the sky “imagine all the people” dreamworld there, but, … pancake batter includes eggs. Yep, eggs whipped right in. Without the shells. In fact as a rule pancakes are far better without the egg shells. Granted, not as nutritious, but still.

October 23, 2016 at 8:52 pm #55927InvaderRamModeratorDoes Keenum figure to be the starter next year?
Is he even on the team next year?
Maybe Keenum is the best chance to win. I don’t think so, but he isn’t winning anyway.
If Goff isn’t ready, play Mannion. I have given up on this year.
this is all about getting a leg up on next year. there’s no sense in continuing with keenum.
i suspect fisher knows this but does not want to make a decision now. i’m almost positive he’s buying himself another 2 weeks to make a decision.
i mean they’ve already announced that they have ramped up his first team reps. now it’s just a matter of evaluating him.
October 23, 2016 at 11:13 pm #55942znModeratorI may be changing my mind.
In the press conference… Fisher flat-out says Goff will play when he’s ready.
I have no reason to doubt the coaches on that.
