I’m reading “Where Men Win Glory” by Jon Krakauer. A bio of Pat Tillman (as well as a lucid account of the rise of the Taliban), the strong safety of the Cards, who walked away from the NFL to go fight in Afghanistan. And we know what happened there.

But i didnt know this — In 2000, Tillman made 361 thousand with the Cards. (they always gave him one year contracts). In 2001 the Rams were impressed with his play. The Rams offered him a five year deal worth 9.6 million. 2.6 million paid up front on signing. Tillman’s agent was thrilled and told Pat to jump on it.
Tillman wanted to think about it. Pat calls his agent in a couple days and sez “The cards drafted me in the seventh round. They believed in me. I love the coaches here. I cant bring myself to take that offer.” The agents says, “Pat you know the cards are gonna only give you 512K if you stay with them.” Pat says, “I’ve made my decision.”

The Cards paid him 512 thousand, in 2001.

i don’t know what to make of that.

on the one hand, i commend him for his loyalty. and that it really isn’t just about the money for him.

on the other hand, i wanna say are you crazy or just stupid? that’s a lot of money to turn down. and nfl teams have proven time and again that they don’t care much for their players.

but the guy definitely lived by a code. gotta respect that.
