Just saw the new Jake Gyllenhaal film “Nightcrawler”.
Good film–but it didn’t blow me away like “Gone Girl” did. The film has gotten some comparisons to “Taxi Driver” and I can see that. There are some similarities of character and story. This film takes on the “news” business and what “news” really means today(hint: more blood and gore–less details on education, local government, etc.).
The film follows Jake as “Lou Bloom” a complete misfit in life who finds his place by becoming a “nightcrawler” which is a guy who chases crime scenes or accidents and hopes to sell film footage to local news. Lou is a dark character–most certainly not mentally balanced, who wants to get the bigger and bigger thing–pushing the edge and going beyond it.
He finds a willing supporter in Rene Russo—an aged news director who can’t hold a job more than 2 years and feeling more and more pressure to boost ratings with gory footage that Lou is only too happy to oblige.
The film is certainly taking a shot at the news and probably us as well, our craven need to watch this stuff. Everyone with a cell phone these days is a “nightcrawler” or at least a potential one.
It holds a mirror up and the reflection isn’t pretty but it is true.
I had some minor complaints about the film–it’s not particularly realistic in certain ways–but it’s message is undeniable.
If you have to pick one film this fall, pick “Gone Girl” but if you’re seeing more, “Nightcrawler” worth a look.
