New #Rams HC Sean McVay: We have an All Pro player in Aaron Donald at 3-technique and he'll stay 3-technique.

Okay that would like like this.
instead of the regular 3/4 DL —>
DE……NG…..DE
OT OG OC OG OTIt would be more like this —->
…..3T..NG….DE
OT OG OC OG OTThe big difference is just that the 4/3 DE now becomes a stand up OLB.
The posterblue and gold used the current Titans defense, which does that too, to illustrate it:

The position has seen an evolution of sorts in recent years. In the past it was associated almost exclusively with pure 4-3 under teams, but more and more we are seeing 3-4 and multiple front teams find a way to get their most talented interior rusher at the 3-technique. Calais Campbell is typically thought of as being a prototypical base 3-4 end, a 5-technique, but the Cardinals lineman spent over half of his snaps in 2014 as a 3-tech.

Yes but in that respect it’s no different from the OLB being a DE in the Rams 4/3 D under Williams.

or rather outside the guard instead of lining up directly opposite the offensive tackle. a 4-3 end would line up outside the tackle.
well. i don’t know that that helps quinn all that much. he’d still be dealing with that offensive tackle instead of being able to run free.

Deonne Buchanon for the Cardinals is an ILBer, they call him a “money backer” $backer, and he’s like Barron, a converted safety. Buchanan plays on the inside and that is where Barron is penciled in according to a comment made by McVay..what Phillips calls the “Mo” backer, with AO the “Mike”. IMO with the Rams Barron will be pitched as “Deonne Buchanan.” I think they will try Barron at Mo linebacker, the coverage LBer. It’s the same as Deonne Buchanan’s money backer role. Buchanan’s not much bigger, if any, than Barron.
He certainly will have to prove he can play it as well as Buchanan…it’s no gimme
So it would be like this
IE like this
January 20, 2017 at 4:14 pm #63967InvaderRamModeratorthe thing that phillips stresses in his video is playing to the players’ strengths.
so he’ll get the best 11 players and use what works.
my guess is he’ll have way more athleticism inside than he did with the broncos. should be exciting. if they could find an olb, this front seven is set.

You know we really don’t know what they have at LB.
They could and probably will add a backer, but, they have a dozen on the roster, if you count possible DE to LB conversions.
There’s of course Quinn who you’d think would be going outside.
Then maybe between and among Sims, Longacre, and Fox they have a 3/4 LB or 2.
There’s last years LBs, Barron and Tree of course.
And who knows about the recently added LBs: Forrest, Grigsby, Hager, Littleton. Maybe there’s a player in there too. I know Littleton has gotten some buzz.
They also have 2 practice squad LBs: Cassanova McKinzy (6-3 253) & Reggie Northrup (6-1 237)
So that’s
Barron Ogletree Quinn Forrest Sims Longacre Fox Littleton Hager Grigsby Northrup McKinzy

possibly. they need an olb who can rush the passer but also drop back and cover. i don’t know if they have that. not sure quinn can do that. ideally they’d have that this year but might not be done until next year. but if they can find a prospect among the guys they do have even better.
i’m interested to see what he does with the inside linebackers. lots of athleticism there. this should be a fun defense to play in.
