On the “Flying Coach” podcast with Peter Schrager, McVay and guest Kliff Kingsbury recalled some of their worst play calls as coaches. After Kingsbury told the story of the Cardinals’ pick-six in Week 17 before halftime last season, McVay tried to one-up him with a bad call of his own against Arizona. (31:25 mark)

“That probably wasn’t nearly as bad as my decision the first time we played you guys to run it on fourth-and-1,” McVay said. “I think you guys had a 12-man zero blitz going. Poor Cam Akers gets bamboozled in the (backfield). It’s a negative-4. I’m like, ‘What?! You gotta be the dumbest idiot, Sean! Why would you do that?!’ Here’s a good idea. When Vance (Joseph) is gonna zero blitz you, let’s run right into an unblocked defender on fourth-and-goal. You talk about wanting to crawl into a hole.”

Kingsbury couldn’t help himself: “That’s one where Goff hands it off and starts walking to the sideline.”

Here’s a look at the play in question.

That wasn’t the only bad call McVay brought up, either. He also recounted a goal line run by John Wolford against the Cardinals where the poor quarterback nearly got his head taken off.

“That might’ve been as bad an idea as having Wolford on the goal line run that he tried to cut back,” McVay said.

    Kingsbury: “He almost got decapitated.”

McVay: “Almost? That was not the design of the play. I’m surprised his head didn’t come off of his body there with the pursuit.”

    Kingsbury: “He got smoked. Smoked.”

McVay: “This segment could last us the next eight episodes if I really want to start recalling all of my bad play calls. There’s a reason why I don’t sleep very well and I think that’s it.”

And here’s Wolford getting crushed at the goal line.
