MCVAY: (On if he sees more opportunities to utilize WR Tavon Austin going forward) “Yeah, Tavon is a guy that we want to continue to get more and more involved in this offense and really, if the game was a little bit different you would have seen him in there a lot more. He’s a guy that’s a playmaker, both as a receiver and like we’ve said with the ball in his hands, so he’s a guy that you’ll continue to see get more work. A lot of it was predicated on that he’s just returning from a hamstring (injury) and we’ve got a rotation of six receivers that are active on game day and we feel really good about all those guys, the ability to rotate guys through, keep them fresh and that’s what you can expect to see.”
LAFLEUR: (On if he envisions using WR Tavon Austin in different ways and expanding his role this week) “Yeah. Really, it’s however we feel is the best way to attack a defense. If his number gets called, then we’re going to use him because he’s an explosive guy. And, just in those plays that he was in, we had a bunch of explosives off of whether he was getting the ball or not.”
Couple of things to note that speak to issues raised in discussing Tavon. First, McVay does not describe him as a receiver. His language on that is qualified: He’s a guy that’s a playmaker, both as a receiver and like we’ve said with the ball in his hands. If you’re a playmaker BOTH as a receiver and in other ways, then…you’re not just a receiver or you’re not a pure receiver or something. I know he means as a returner too, but they used him to run the ball too last week so McVay, IMO, gets what Tavon is and how to use him/.
Also, LaFleur points out that they know they can use Tavon as a decoy: “And, just in those plays that he was in, we had a bunch of explosives off of whether he was getting the ball or not.” Decoy. Which also fits well with how you use Tavon. If you set it up so he is a playmaker one way or another, defenses have to account for him…and if they don’t account for him, that means he’s not a decoy (or not an effective one). Which means in turn that of course since he WAS effective as a decoy last week, defenses actually are keeping an eye on him.

Just caught Rob Ryan on Colin Cowherd’s show. He brought up an interesting tidbit about the on-field relationship involving Austin and Rams’ rushing attack that I hadn’t really put much thought into.
He said that, in Buffalo, one of the main reasons that Shady McCoy has enjoyed success there is because defenses have to respect Tyrod Taylor’s running ability on the read-option. Taylor’s ability to give weak-side rushers “pause” really helps their rushing attack even if he keeps the ball once or twice a game for no gain.
Ryan said that the same situation exists for the Rams and Tavon Austin. But instead of running the read-option, Tavon is doing the jet sweep. And Tavon’s speed and open-field ability forces defenders to pause in the same manner.
Kinda an expensive decoy, but Austin definitely has a role out there.
Ryan also took a parting shot at the Bills organization for letting both Woods and Watkins go. He said that they’ve decided to part ways with several good players – and coaches too.

i think all that is just coach speak. as soon as they can get rid of him they will.
there’s only so many balls that can go around. gurley, watkins, woods, kupp, everett… eventually he’ll be the sixth option on this team. maybe not now but soon he will be. there’s not much use for him anymore.

Except you just listed the WRs.
Last night the guy who spelled Gurley at RB was Tavon.
September 22, 2017 at 7:41 pm #74768wvParticipantI think Tavon has some big pluses but he has some big minuses too. He’s not just an explosive multi-purpose weapon — he’s also a weapon who FUMBLES.
I dont like fumblers. I never liked the great E.D. cause of that, and i sure dont like it from a guy at Tavon’s level.
So for ‘me’ the fumbles are HUGE.
I dont want him returning kicks. If I’m the opposing team I DO want him returning kicks.
As for his value as a decoy — i think thats big, and its important. I say that because both Fisher AND McV have used him that way, so they must know something.
It must really help the blocker get an edge and Gurley get an edge, etc. If it freezes the defenders even for a second, GREAT.And as a Decoy….tavon doesnt FUMBLE. So let him do that until they cant afford his contract. Then jettison him and get some cheaper version to be the decoy.

i did mention gurley. he was the first guy i mentioned.
long-term. tavon is not going to be here to spell gurley. for now? well sure. what else are they going to do with him? use him on jet sweeps? sure. and i understand that just the threat of him running the jet sweep can cause a defense to hesitate.
still. he’s got 40 yards from scrimmage and zero tds on the season. he’s becoming obsolete.
