Malcolm Brown establishing himself as Todd Gurley’s backup

    By Alden Gonzalez

IRVINE, Calif. — The Los Angeles Rams signed Lance Dunbar over the offseason to serve as both a backup to Todd Gurley and also a supplemental piece, as a versatile running back who specializes in catching passes out of the backfield. But Dunbar hasn’t been able to practice. He’s dealing with a lingering knee injury and there’s no timetable for his return, which means there’s now a major void behind Gurley.

Apparently Malcolm Brown is filling it.

Rams coach Sean McVay said after practice on Monday that he’s been “pleasantly surprised” with Brown, who has “done a nice job of establishing himself in that secondary role.”

“He’s got a quiet confidence about himself, where he just goes about his business, very reliable, knows exactly what to do and how to do it,” McVay said. “He’s a guy that we can depend on.”

Brown was an undrafted free agent out of Texas in 2015 and received only 22 carries, for 56 yards, in his first two seasons in the NFL. Without Dunbar, though, the Rams don’t have much of any experience behind Gurley. The only other options are an undrafted free agent from 2016, Aaron Green, and three undrafted free agents from 2017 — Justin Davis, De’Mard Llorens and Lenard Tillery.

If Dunbar doesn’t get healthy, the Rams may have to eventually address the running back position from the outside. The Rams were recently linked to free agent Rashad Jennings, an excellent pass blocker who has rushed for 3,772 yards and caught 191 passes for 1,469 yards during his seven-year career. Others will surely become available later in training camp.

“I think we’re looking to find who those guys are to be able to complement that room, and that’s something that’s ongoing,” McVay said. “That’s why you’re excited about the competition. You’ve got guys like Aaron Green and Justin Davis; they’ve shown some flashes. But we’ll be able to continue to monitor that and evaluate it moving forward.”

Malcolm Brown impressing Sean McVay at Rams camp

    By Tyler Horka NFL.com

IRVINE, Calif. — The Rams’ running back situation looks incredibly thin on paper.

But don’t tell that to head coach Sean McVay.

Third-year starter Todd Gurley is one of the future faces of the franchise and remains the clear starter in Los Angeles despite a severe drop in production in 2016. Gurley backed up his sensational rookie campaign with only 885 yards on a mere 3.2 yards per carry last season. Much of his struggles can be attributed to an offensive line that struggled to find its footing.

By signing veteran offensive tackle Andrew Whitworth and adding veteran center John Sullivan, the Rams’ front office is clearly looking out for the young running back. But other than Gurley, to whom will former first-overall draft choice Jared Goff hand the ball this season? McVay has an idea.

“I think clearly Todd has done a great job kind of leading that group, but I’ve been pleasantly surprised with Malcolm Brown,” McVay said after Monday’s practice. “He’s kind of got a quiet confidence about himself where [he] just goes about his business. [He’s] really reliable, knows what to do and what not to do. And he’s a guy that we can depend on.”

Brown has spent two seasons with the organization since entering the league as an undrafted free agent out of Texas in 2015. He’s only compiled 22 carries in those two seasons, but could be slated for a big year given the team’s current outlook at the position.

Lance Dunbar, a solid No. 2 RB when healthy, landed on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list heading into training camp. Given Dunbar’s history of injuries — he missed 26 games in his five seasons with the Cowboys — expect Brown to see an increased role as camp goes on.

Until Dunbar gets back, Brown appears to be able to shoulder the load when Gurley needs a breather. McVay said second-year runner Aaron Green and rookie rusher Justin Davis have also gotten looks in camp, but Gurley and Brown currently pack the one-two punch.

“I think we’re looking to find who some of the other guys are that will be able to complement that room, and that’s something that’s ongoing,” McVay said. “So we’ll continue to monitor that and evaluate it moving forward. I think those two guys have really stood out in terms of Todd being the lead dog, being the epitome of what we want it to look like from that leader in that group. And I think Malcolm has done a nice job of establishing himself as that secondary role.”

Brown Solidifying Role as No. 2 RB

Entering training camp, one of the potential position battles appeared to be at No. 2 running back. Benny Cunningham’s departure via free agency left a void at what had been his spot for the last few years.

Lance Dunbar was signed to be a kind of change-of-pace back who can make plays in both the pass and run game out of the backfield. But he opened camp on the Physically Unable to Perform list, and at last check, head coach Sean McVay said there was no clear timetable for when the running back may return to the field.

“We’re continuing to monitor him,” McVay said Saturday, noting Dunbar is doing exactly what he’s been asked to do. “It is a specific situation with the injury that he did have on that knee a couple years ago. We want to be smart with that. But in terms of a timetable, we don’t have one right now.”

And so the question remains: Has anyone else at running back made a significant impression on the Rams’ head coach?

“I’ve been pleasantly surprised with Malcolm Brown,” McVay said Monday. “He’s kind of got a quiet confidence about himself where he just goes about his business. He’s very reliable, knows exactly what to do and how to do it. And he’s a guy that we can depend on.”

Originally signed as an undrafted rookie out of Texas in 2015, Brown spent most of his first pro season on the practice squad before being called up for the Rams’ Week 17 matchup against San Francisco. In 2016, Brown was mainly a special teams contributor throughout the 16-game slate, but recorded 39 yards on 18 carries and 46 yards on three receptions.

In addition to Brown, McVay mentioned second-year running back Aaron Green and undrafted free agent — and USC product — Justin Davis as players who have “shown some flashes.”

But there may be some changes coming to the No. 2 running back role compared to the past few years. For his first two seasons, starting running back Todd Gurleyhas mainly been used on first and second down, with Cunningham coming in on third down. How much Gurley will be used as a three-down back remains to be seen, but McVay has consistently called Gurley “a complete back.”

“That’s how we feel as a coaching staff,” he said Monday.

With that, pass protection will be an emphasis for Gurley — just as it is with any running back.

“We’ll ask different things with him and our backs in general from protection,” McVay said. “[W]ith putting the pads on, you can do a little more physicality drills, and turn to some of the one-on-one linebacker-running back pass rush and continue to work those fits. But just with any other back — and Todd’s no different — we will definitely have pass protection as an emphasis for those guys.”

As the Rams continue training camp with their first padded practice tomorrow afternoon, a practice with the Chargers on Saturday, and then the club’s first preseason game on August 12, the depth chart at running back will continue to take shape. With six running backs currently on the roster, this should be a competitive position for the 53-man roster. But at least for now, Brown appears to be the clear No. 2 behind Gurley.

“I think those two guys have really stood out in terms of Todd being the lead dog, being the epitome of what we want it to look like from that leader and that group,” McVay said. “And I think Malcolm has done a nice job of establishing himself as that secondary role.”

Been following Brown since his freshman year at Texas …

He could have quit or dropped his effort after he got injured and lost touches in college, but he didn’t. He loves the game … he’s got agile hips and ankles … and he’s freaking powerful.

He was a top recruit coming out … and then fell a little behind … he may be wayyyyy more talented than anyone realizes.

Having a bunch of talented RBs with fresh legs is a problem I can enjoy.
