=====================
Laram — Cant lose your job due to injury?IMO Tru Johnson should.
I think Gaines is *going* to be better. He’s not there yet, but he has shown me more ability than Tru has.
As I’ve said before I think Tru is receiver specific, meaning he only excels at guarding larger receivers.
I think Gaines has the potential to be more versatile, and he’s a better tackler.
Tru would be my new nickel, and I would ride with Gaines.

September 17, 2014 at 8:55 am #7627znModeratorInteresting, but then, everyone in the secondary is playing better than last year. So we don;t know where Johnson stands–he could be a different player too. I think the nickel who replaces Joyner there is McGee.

I don’t think that can be determined at this point, and IMO Gaines did not play well against Minny.
He gave up several completions and a TD, so my evaluation is not on how he’s played, I’m strictly looking at his movements and instincts.

You can tell they’re playing better by watching them. They’re better, as individuals and as a unit (Gaines of course is a rookie so we can’t rightly say he is better than last year). Anyway. What we will find out after they go up against top passing offenses is, HOW MUCH better.
September 17, 2014 at 12:07 pm #7645laramParticipantMaybe you can, I can’t.
Against Matt Cassel and Josh McCown is not that great a test but even with that, they’re giving up about 71% comp %.
That AIN’T better.
They’re tackling better, that’s for sure.

Yeah LA they’re better. It’s pretty visible.
The question is how much. Because yes, they have not really been tested…so we can’t know how much yet.
September 17, 2014 at 12:14 pm #7647laramParticipantIF 71% comp % against the likes of McCown and Cassel is better…the Rams are in trouble.

They’re better LA. You can see it. And that’s with a rookie starting.
September 17, 2014 at 12:58 pm #7652TrenchRamParticipantHow do you evaluate secondary play based on TV? That’s the thing that I miss most about having season tickets; it’s just really hard to know what’s going on downfield until the ball gets there unless they show the wider angle on replay.
September 17, 2014 at 1:16 pm #7654PA RamParticipantI don’t know who is better but it’s easy to tell when a cb is struggling.
Gaines seems to be doing very well.

September 17, 2014 at 9:26 pm #7714InvaderRamModeratorwell let’s see how they do against the cowboys. although with the way our run defense has been going, dallas might want to play it more conservative.
September 18, 2014 at 5:02 pm #7794Isiah58ParticipantI was really impressed with how Jenkins played last week. He gave up a few completions, but contested everything and tackled well. I thought that Johnson was more consistent than Jenkins last year, and I agree that the secondary has been much better through two games. Gaines has shown promise, and also shown that he is not afraid to tackle at least.
You can look to the completion percentage as evidence that they are not playing well, but through two games QBs are just getting the ball out as quickly as they can. No one is threatening the Rams deep, IMO, for fear of their pass rush. Which is also why they have not gotten more than 1 sack. Because teams are going mostly to three step drops, screens, and throwing boots to the tight end. Before Tampa fell behind in the last minute, we didn’t see McCown take a seven step drop all day or throw the ball deep. Neither did Kassel. Sunday may be different, but so far no one has challenged the Rams vertically.

September 18, 2014 at 5:59 pm #7802MackeyserModeratorNO! Not McGee! Not yet!
Holy Jeebus… Near the end of the game, I saw McGee on our side be on the outside, man up on Evans and I started screaming, McGee’s on Evans, McGee’s on Evans!!! As in “he’s drowning, help him!!!”
Sure enough, Evans takes two or three strides, breaks off a nice In route and were it not for McLeod almost breaking his hip, he’d have been gone. McGee got straight BURNED.
We need Tru back in a bad way. I don’t care how they parse out the jobs, but that starting trio of JJ, Tru and Gaines is the business. Once Joyner is good, we’re going to really be solid…
