year three is the year we often hear that the rubber meets the road. The time line used by most evaluators for properly evaluating a draft class. Supposedly when players hit their stride and begin to determine their impact.
For the sake of discussion, let’s use that standard for sh—s and giggles.
The 2012 draft class:
1 14 Michael Brockers – Thus far, mid-round talent. Not an impact player
2 33 Brian Quick – Starting to show dividends third year but incomplete grade
2 39 Janoris Jenkins – A lightening rod of controversy. Up and down play
2 50 Isaiah Pead – BUST
3 65 Trumaine Johnson – Average player
4 96 Chris Givens – Has been surpassed on the depth chart and seems to have regressed
5 150 Rokevious Watkins – BUST
6 171 Greg Zuerlein – Good player
7 209 Aaron Brown – WHO?
7 252 Daryl Richardson – BUST
Based on the three year standard, I would rate their first draft class as a failure.
….
(On Brockers) … I think you can find a player mid to late rd that would do what he does. I don’t see anything that he does particularly well, and didn’t see it before he was drafted. I had several discussions with people here that loved him, and claimed he was the best defensive player in the draft.
He’s not even the best DT on the team.
He is a perfect example of what I have described many times of a player fitting a certain profile, and coaches thinking they can make him be this or that. They had him lose weight, they were going to make him into a pass rusher. That’s not who he is, but got some sacks because of edge pressure.
Then last season he put weight back on and was gonna disrupt the middle by tying up blockers.
Then the Rams realized that he wasn’t getting the middle penetration they wanted, so they drafted Donald. Now I’m not sure what he’s doing other than standing at the los and hand fighting.
He’s not quick, he’s not overpowering, I guess he would be better playing 0 tech.
I dunno I’ve never been happy with the pick..
