As I’ve said before, I like Mariota and have followed his career mainly because of the proximity to my alma mater.

But I cannot draft him and would hope the Rams wouldn’t either.

I shared some of my concerns about him and got affirmation.

    Positives

    Athletic
    Cerebral
    Sufficient arm strength
    Work ethic
    Competitive
    Character

    Negatives

    Slight Build
    Footwork
    No experience under center
Has not called a play in a huddle
Accustomed to throwing to wide open receivers
    Limited experience reading defenses
No experience in a pro style offense
    System inflation
    Leadership
Has not thrown the entire route tree (Middle of the field stick throws)
    One read thrower
Gonna be asked to do things he’s never done
    Needs time.

Marcus Mariota is too much of a “projection” for me to use a high 1st rd pick on.

With the exception of athletically, I rate him very similarly to Sam Bradford.

    (on leadership)
Not sure if that makes sense to you but the bond and respect you command in the huddle through communication is huge.

When you can look into the leader of your units eyes and see confidence, it permeates throughout.

Looking to the sideline and calling plays in shotgun, is robotic.

That all might sound corny but from MY experience its true.

Boy that sounds eerily familiar. I (and others) said all that about Bradford before the 2010 draft. But then…I also think SB lived up to the challenge and overcame all those things. I think he became a very good NFL qb. For me, the only thing holding him back has been injuries.

I don;t know if Mariota will develop along those lines or not.
