Seahawks Kam Chancellor on 911 incident: ‘Just crazy how you have to go through that in 2016’

Seattle Seahawks strong safety Kam Chancellor added some further details to an incident that happened in Redmond Wednesday during an interview with radio station Power 99.1 in the Tri-Cities, saying that it’s “just crazy how you have to go through that in 2016.”

As Chancellor detailed in a series of tweets this week, and which was later confirmed by the police, two employees at the Redmond Athletic Club called 911 after Chancellor and four others approached the gym, which had closed earlier in week.

Chancellor said in the 99.1 interview he was interested in buying the gym and when he and his group saw two cars in the parking lot they figured there would be people inside they could try to talk to to get information about the facility —Chancellor runs fitness boot camps for women through his company Form By Force.

Chancellor said when there was no response they looked inside and also took some pictures so they could assess “our business plan” later. He said they were then were noticed by the women.

“The first thing the lady did was look at us with an evil, devil look and shooed us off,” Chancellor said.

Chancellor said “we were in disgust like ‘what?’ ” and told the women “we just want to get information, that’s all.”

Chancellor said the women “decided to stand 10 to 15 yards away behind a desk, saying, ‘shoo, we’re going to call the cops.’ We were like: ‘What? Call the cops because we want information?’ ”

Chancellor said his group then left and drove about five blocks away where the cops pulled them over in the parking lot of a theater. He said there his group and the cops “talked about the situation and we just leave. It was so simple to get it over with.”

The incident came to light when Chancellor tweeted about it Wednesday night.

The club’s owner, Ryan Neal, released a statement Thursday about the incident.

Neal’s statement read: “We regret this unfortunate incident but completely support the actions of our employees. Our team responded in a manner as instructed by me under the guidance of the Redmond Police Department. We always err on the side of caution when an individual or individuals try to gain entry to the club unannounced. We have recently had attempted break-ins and still have members’ property in the club that we need to protect until returned.

“I have confirmed with Redmond PD that our employee response was appropriate given the situation, but we are nevertheless conducting a review of the security footage to ensure their response was appropriate. As the owner of the Redmond Athletic Club, I have attempted to reach out to Mr. Chancellor to discuss his interest in the purchase of the club in a traditional business discussion. If Mr. Chancellor or anyone else is interested in the club or our equipment, they can reach out to me directly or attend our public auction in April.”

Becky Range, the public information officer for the Redmond Police Department, described the incident as a misunderstanding.

A tape of the 911 call, released Thursday, revealed that the person making the call indicated three of the people were African-American and two were white.

The woman said the people had been outside the building for around 10 minutes and said, “I don’t know what’s coming next. They are bad news.” She added, “I don’t know if they are homeless kids. I know that there used to be a lot of heroin addicts around here.”

Chancellor gave the 99.1 interview to promote one of his boot camps held in Kennewick.

Chancellor has posted some additional tweets about the incident in the past few days. In one he wrote “Leave the rest to God.. Praying for these two women.”
