I call B.S. If that was true, Fisher would quit. The smart thing would be to acquire the the pleasure players, and working Shawn Mannion as the future.

I’ll be honest. That was my first thought/reaction when they moved up to #1 and the rumor was it was for Goff. IMO, Goff does NOT fit what the Rams’ offense is supposedly all about. He does, however, fit the model for a California QB. Good lookin’ kid, hometown kid, photogenic, magnet for Cali grads becoming Rams fans, etc.

I thought (and still think) that Wentz would have been the perfect fit for the tendencies Boras showed last year. Elements of zone-read, a focus on the run game (including letting the QB pull it down and take off), an affinity for how Seattle plays offense, and a real smart kid. Woulda been perfect. That aside, I was more taken aback by the fact that they would part with so many draft picks for a QB in a weak QB class when there was SO much defensive talent in the first two rounds.

I dunno. It’s probably all bullshit, but I didn’t think so at the time. And it certainly wouldn’t surprise me if true.

That is a good point about the QB class. If Goff really was drafted simply because he’s a prettier poster boy for LA than Wentz then they deserve the worst.

I disagree with that. I never thought Goff wasn’t a Rams type qb or didn’t fit in some way.

And have lived in southern california, I have trouble buying the idea that a laid back, soft spoken kid from Cal would fit southern california ideas of celebrity.

Hmm. I’m not sure that a soft-spoken good looking kid *isn’t* a marketing dream. Seems perfect to me. I could easily see him on billboards across the area, but I have a hard time envisioning Wentz getting the chicks excited. Not saying that’s the case. Just saying *if it was* the case, he’d be more aptly suited to draw in new fans than Opie.

And yeah, Goff might be suitable for the Rams offense if he becomes everything they thought Bradford was gonna be. Otherwise, Wentz was (and is) more pro-ready, mobile, intelligent, bigger and stronger. That’s a fit for smash-mouth offense. I mean, they ran a couple of zone-read plays with Keenum on Monday. Almost feels like they wanna wholly commit to that kind of offense, but can’t. Anyway. Don’t wanna cave jump down this rabbit hole any further. I’m just entertaining the conspiracy theory a little.

I’d suspect that it’s possible that Snisher was forced to draft Goff or Wentz or Goff after the pitiful QB play the past two or four seasons and then the trade and then the hours of analysis and the private visits and the more hours of analysis and the endless meetings talking about the attributes of each. Then, and only then did they take the strawberries… er I mean draft Goff.

Let him sit until he’s ready – like a nice strawberry-rhubarb pie.

I see no reason that Goff won’t be better or just as good and win more titles. That’s because I haven’t seen Goff play in a real game yet. But, I don’t want him to play before he’s ready – that’s their best move now.

Yes but you’re forgetting that Goff blew them away with his passing in the rain. As soon as the weather turns ugly look out!

I think Goff’s going to be a good one.

What’s his ceiling? I think he has the makings to become one of the best qbs Rams have had since we’ve been watching them.

take this for what it’s worth, but football outsiders had goff as the ninth highest rated prospect of the last 21 years.

    http://www.footballoutsiders.com/stat-analysis/2016/qbase-2016

    Jared Goff (California)

Mean Projection in Years 3-5: 1,211 DYAR
    Bust (< 500 DYAR) 28.3%
    Adequate Starter (500-1499 DYAR) 34.1%
    Upper Tier (1500-2500 DYAR) 23.5%
    Elite (>2500 DYAR) 14.2%
While Goff is not a sure thing, his estimated chances of succeeding in the NFL are only a little bit lower than Marcus Mariota’s, QBASE’s favorite prospect from the 2015 draft. Goff had the kind of numbers in his final collegiate season (64.5 percent completion rate, 8.9 YPA, 43 TD, 13 INT) that successful NFL quarterbacks usually have. He posted those numbers against a good, but not great, set of defenses (ranked No. 30 in college football by our estimates). He had little help in terms of NFL-caliber talent at receiver or on the offensive line. The only teammate at those positions who projects to be drafted in the first four rounds this year or next is potential third-round receiver Kenny Lawler.
Goff becomes QBASE’s No. 9 quarterback prospect of the last 21 years. Mariota occupied that same spot last year, but has moved up in the reshuffling since another year of data has been added to the model.

QBASE Top 10 Prospects Since 1996
    Player Projected DYAR
    Philip Rivers 1,969
    Carson Palmer 1,934
    Donovan McNabb 1,831
    Peyton Manning 1,306
    Marcus Mariota 1,302
    Russell Wilson 1,246
    Byron Leftwich 1,239
    Ben Roethlisberger 1,227
    Jared Goff 1,211
    Aaron Rodgers 1,205
Players from earlier years are part of the model that creates the projections, so the takeaway here is not that Goff is likely to be as good as his fellow Cal alum just below him on the list. Goff placing so highly instead says that his resume resembles those of other prospects who succeeded as NFL quarterbacks. Our projection gives Goff the best shot this year, almost 40 percent, of being the kind of upper-tier player who solves a team’s long-term quarterback dilemma.

He had a qb forced on him before and was public in his displeasure.

Plus I genuinely doubt SK is so stupid he believes 2 things: 1, that a draft pick will bring in ticket sales, and 2, that you can force a qb on a head coach…especially if it involves a LOT of draft picks.

Carroll Rosenbloom was that stupid. I don’t believe SK is.

Right now I don’t believe Fisher is lying as much as I believe that angry fans will believe ANYTHING negative about him. Likely or not.

Btw ag, Fisher speaking is direct testimony. Whether it is accepted as true or not. Keyshawn citing unnamed “inside” and “outside” (!) sources is hearsay. (What are outside sources? “My grocer says…”)

    I dunno, but I believe Silver. Even though he’s a F.O.F.

I dont think Kronky gets involved with personnel issues on the football team. I think Kronky leaves that to the people he hires.

Kronky gets involved in billion dollar real estate bizness. I dont think he gives a shit about who the Rams draft.
(I ‘do’ think Kronky wants to ‘win’ and all, but i dont think he interferes in personnel decisions)

He just doesnt strike me as a Jerry Jones type.

I wanted Shaq Lawson. The Lakers had their Shaq, and I thought it would be great to have our own Shaq as well. On top, with us losing Chris Long, it would have been nice to get a pass rusher from the DE spot. I like Quinn, but Quinn is not back to his old self yet.

I believed that before any of this came out. So, I don’t need any of it to confirm or deny. I guess there is a difference, if you can actually name your source, but it remains effectively the same to me.

I believe Goff was an LA marketing decision, not a football decision. Others are free to believe different.

Really? You think a coach on the hot-seat, who has already been burned by an owner forcing a QB on him would take a rookie QB just for marketing reasons?

I dont see Fisher or Kronky that way, myself. And…for starters, this idea that Goff is some sort of ‘golden boy’ and Wentz is a ‘farm boy’ thing, doesn’t resonate with me. I mean, I’ve watched Goff on the interview vids and he strikes me as about as bland as they come. Wentz actually seems more lively to me.

At any rate, what about all the experts that evaluated Goff and the other QBs and concluded Goff was the special one ? They had no reason to be influenced by ‘marketing’.

I just think Fisher saw something special in Goff. Ya know. Like with Brian Quick 🙂

My guess for all this is that Stan and Demoff met with Fisher and Snead and talked about the idea or value of making a big move for marketing props. But the move, the pick, the deal was all snisher. And, then when it was all on the table they met again and went over specifics and everybody was in agreement. As far as picking Goff vs Wentz was concerned I think that was all snead and fisher and their staff.

The idea was Rams needed a QB bad, which they do. So they made a deal to get the one they thought was the beat one. And, there’s a good chance that Goff is. Time will tell and Wentz looked good but it’s one game in his rookie season – we’ll see.

Pumpkin chiffon – might try that.

Up until it was clear the Rams would take Goff, I was fine with either one. I thought you end up with a different kind of offense for each one, but I was fine with that too.

In fact it would not surprise me if both did well for their careers.

Like Elway and Marino. Although. Of course. Not quite that lofty……..
