John Robinson is a great coach/motivator and quality person. JR was a coach that allowed his staff the autonomy to coach and his players to play. It was an air of confidence that professionals should be treated like professionals and thus conduct themselves accordingly. In other words, get your job done, let no stone go unturned and get out there and take care of business. The leader on the team were experienced and very vocal (Dennis Harrah, Jackie Slater, Nolan Cromwell, Carl Ekern, Jerry Gray and so many more). JR gave them the keys to the team (to the players) and we all bought in that it was our show. JR was the person to keep us focused on our task and that was to be 1-0 every week. It was an honor to be coached by John Robinson.
When Jeff Fisher arrived to Rams Park as D coordinator, John’s older defense staff was let go. Our defense transitioned from a 3-4 to a 4-3 defense. Jeff is a fantastic motivator and a very professional person. And to Jeff’s defense for the early performances, the team was not built nor really ready for a true Chicago type 4-3 package. That would be approached by future drafts and the loss of Kevin Green was tough for he was out of position in a 4-3 scheme. Kevin would later resurface in a 3-4 scheme in Pittsburgh and had one heck of a career.
Jeff was young when he first came to the Rams and learned much. I’d bet he recalls those early experiences as what to and not to do on the defensive side of the ball. Early on we all knew Jeff was a risk taker and that was a bit of a change from the Shurmer years. Well, as we can see today, the risk master is still at it and pulling rabbits out of hats.
Jeff is a fun guy and he always surrounded himself with exception people. I remember a very wild D line coach named John Teerlink. He didn’t have much liking for us quarterbacks and he let us know it. But over the years, John has produced some fantastic D linemen. That is just one example of the strong characters that Jeff can work with. There are many other coaches and players that have benefited from Jeff’s ability to be flexible yet steady at the helm. I wish him luck and I do wish him the best in the toughest division in the NFL.
Coaching in the NFL is Not For Long, but the two men I discussed are two of the best in the business and I am proud to have played on a team with their leadership.
