Attorney for Kaepernick, Reid has been oddly quiet, now we know why

For most of the summer, attorney Mark Geragos, who represents former 49ers Colin Kaepernick and Eric Reid, has been promising a dramatic development regarding his clients’ collusion grievance against the NFL.

And for most of the summer, we’ve been treated to a chorus of crickets. Now we know why.

Speaking on his most recent Reasonable Doubt podcast (“the best hour in the universe”), Geragos says he has been “muzzled” by a protective court order.

“I know what really is going on between Jerry Jones, the president, the anthem policy, why they’re doing all this,” Geragos said. “And they already tried to admonish me.”

What’s going on (that we can see) is that the league decided to go silent on the anthem until a final solution could be hashed out. Whereupon Jones, owner of the Dallas Cowboys, broke the silence to announce his own personal anthem policy. “Our policy is that you stand at the anthem, toe on the line,” he told reporters at his team’s training camp in California. The option for players to remain in the locker room while the anthem is played, allowed by the current lame-duck policy? Jones fed it through a shredder.

Quicker than you can say “Frostee Rucker,” the current squatter in the Oval Office picked up his pom poms:

You’d think Jones would have been buoyed by the backing of the president. You’d be wrong.

“His interest in what we’re doing is problematic,” Jones told the Los Angeles Times. “Unprecedented, if you really think about it … but like the very game itself, that’s the way it is. We feel very strongly about how we deal with it. Of course, I’d like, everybody would like, it to go away.”

That’ll happen — the day NFL players calmly hand the football to the nearest official after scoring a touchdown.

Back to Geragos, who deposed Jones (for “many hours”) on behalf of Kaepernick and is dying to tell what he knows.

“Whenever I want to talk about something that I think the public should know, that this is a partisan political issue and I’ve got proof of it, but I’m under a protective order,” he said. “People don’t actually understand what’s happening behind the scenes with the Cowboys and the president. I don’t think you can put me under a protective order. Why am I complicit in what I think is a crime?”

The deeper Geragos gets into this maze of funhouse mirrors, the less it seems to be about Kaepernick, who hasn’t played in an NFL game since he opted out of his 49ers contract early in 2017, and Reid, whose contract expired at the end of the 2017 season.

Meanwhile, Jones attended a Cowboys practice over the weekend which was preceded by a rendition of the anthem. You read correctly — we are now playing the anthem before practices. Not only that, but ol’ “Toe the Line” Jones neglected to remove his cap, according to USA Today.

The more it looks like Kaepernick and Reid will never see an NFL field again, the more you wonder if they’re the lucky ones.
