It seems as if the NFL is really living up to their initials lately, Not For Long. QBs who once received rave, even “can’t miss” labels before their respective drafts, were shipped off to other teams (or cut) not long after. Most of the time, for next to nothing. Rosen, Goff, Darnold, Wentz, Haskins, etc.
If a team has the luxury to wait, already has their “bridge guy,” they’re better off, IMO, waiting. If you’re confident about your own team, staff, ability to teach and motivate, etc . . . wait. Play the ultra-informed “scavenger.”
Think about it. Think about the Rams NOT trading away so much draft capital to move up to grab Goff in the first place, and then all of that draft capital to trade him before he turns 27 . . . Be the team, instead, that picks him up from the original seller.
Wait. Patience, grasshopper!
And this goes for paying a king’s ransom for an older QB, too. I’m still against the Stafford trade for that reason and more. I still think it’s nutz. Obviously I’m pulling for him and hoping for the best. But it’s worse than bad chess, IMO. It’s potentially a franchise wrecker.
To make a long story short, I think the NFL is dumping their young guns sooner than ever before, and teams would be smart to be on the other side of the (fire sale) equation — as buyers, rather than sellers.
