Hey invader (and everyone else): we had this discussion about the Rams base DL

early returns on fiske seem to be really really positive. from multiple sources. and it seems like everyone makes a point to mention him. players. journalists. fans. i’m excited.

Yeah so far the buzz on Fiske is good. But I was wondering how they will line up the base 3/4. It kind of seems like Turner and Fiske are the same guy. Both 3-techs. Will they have a tradition 5-tech like they did with Donald? Wouldn’t Turner and Fiske be on the field at the same time only in passing down packages? So will it be * Turner/Fiske * Brown * [someone at DE ie. a 5-tech…but who] * Or is the base 3/4 DL going to be 2 3-techs + a nose? so * Fiske * Brown * Turner * ?

that is a question for someone with more football knowledge than me.

Yeah right now it’s a bit mysterious.

Anyway since that discussion, someone put out an unofficial depth chart, and it doesn’t even list a 5-tech/DE for their base, just 3-tech DTs.

The Rams base 3/4 DL with Donald included a 3-tech DT…a nose…and a 5-tech DE. Like I said, on that unofficial depth chart, they don’t even list a 5-tech DE. There were a lot of variations because they moved Donald around, but that was the base DL configurations.

Now it’s just NTs and DTs.

I wonder how much of that will translate to the field and if they’re really going to play a bae DL consisting of 2 3-techs on either side of an NT.

And this is how the Rams own site lists the DL players by position:

    DEs

    Anthony Goodlow DE 6-5 284

    Desjuan Johnson DE 6-3 285

    DLs

    Tyler Davis DL 6-2 299

    Tuli Letuligasenoa DL 6-1 287

    David Olajiga DL 6-3 315

    DTs

    Cory Durden DT 6-4 316

    Braden Fiske DT 6-4 291

    Larrell Murchison DT 6-2 285

    NTs

Bobby Brown III NT 6-4 332

    Kobie Turner NT 6-2 297

It actually appears that what they’re doing a lot is playing (from defensive right to defensive left):

    3-tech DT: Fiske
    NT: Turner
    DE: Johnson

with Brown rotating in at NT.

That’s an undersized DL that is aggressive and quick against the pass.

rodrigue mentioned that she particularly liked seeing fiske and turner play next to each other so it doesn’t surprise me.

i take that as a good sign that johnson is playing well.
