I see out there around the net that some Rams fans think the Chargers game indicates Goff is further behind than we would like. ‘

    Some disagree.

There seems to be a few takes on this. Or in some cases a combination of them.

    1. Goff was held back by Fisher, and he’s better than he seemed in 2016…that will change for the better in 2017

    2. Goff does not have it, regardless of the coach

    3. Goff started out especially green and made progress since 2016. We (a) don’t know how good he is yet or even if he is, or (b) can see he will be a good one, or (c) are getting mixed signals.

No one seems to be complaining about the 2017 offensive coaching. On the contrary, that’s pretty universally seen optimistically.

This informal poll is not a “who’s right/wrong” thing. People could change their minds on this any number of times before Goff’s on the field play settles it one day. So it really is, where do you stand NOW…it being understood that that could change with circumstances.

Goff has enough physical talent. Although I think his arm talent is sometimes overestimated, it is plenty good enough. He has shown that he has good potential. But he is really Green. So far, so good, but he has a super long way to go.

Goff was really green coming out of college and his development was hampered by Boras and Fisher. To me he’s still a rookie. He’s starting over fresh, but at least he’s now being mentored by someone who by all appearances knows what he’s doing. I think that is evident in the progress Goff made this preseason. But he’s still a little raw so patience is in order. Goff is on an upward trajectory but he’s going to have some dips and dives during his ascent.

i have no idea. i don’t think we can take too much from the charger game. i don’t think we can take too much from the raider game either.

i think i’ll have a better idea after the first four games. and i think i’ll know by the end of the season.

i think the physical skills are there. that’s why he was picked number one overall. i’m just not sure about the mental part.

    D84 (from the RFU board):

    DEFINING SUCCESS FOR JARED GOFF

So.. what are expectations for Goff and what kinds of numbers would define a successful season? Can “successful” be broken down into levels of success?

For me.. a successful season would look something like..

Finishing out of the bottom 10 in yards per game and rating. That would be the base point for “success” to me. Wentz was 20th in YPG last season at 236 and Palmer was 20th in rating at 87.2.

Does that sound like a good “floor”? For me.. that would show significant improvement.. but be a realistic step after last season. Plus I just have a hard time believing a team with a QB that hit those marks wouldn’t do significantly better than 27th in scoring.

If he somehow jumped into top 15 in both? I would consider that a VERY successful year.
Andy Dalton was 15th in rating with a 91.8.. and Bradford was 5th in YPG with 3877

To me… a 23 year old putting up those kinds of numbers would be really… really nice and make me feel like he has a better than good chance of being a true “franchise” QB.

These are, of course.. just raw numbers. I’m sure all of us are hoping for signs in his leadership.. some “wow” plays as well.

I’m all “wait and see” here. I just don’t have a feel one way or the other. I do know if he fails with this coaching staff and receivers and upgraded line, it’s not good. We shall see.
