I wasn’t a band kid, but my son was. He actually did the 5 year tour, starting in 8th grade (the high school band director went to the middle school to recruit; he wanted to go from a 4 Open to a 5 Open, and needed more bodies in the band).
I think it was the best thing he did. By the time he got to high school, he had 100+ upper classmen friends.
Oh, and the wife and I got drafted to be band parents. That meant we got to lug the props on and off the field every show. The worst was his senior year. They did “Something Wicked This Way Comes” and had a friggin fun house prop that was over 15 feet tall. Well, it didn’t fit down the ramp at Met Life Stadium. We had to take off the top of the damn thing, get it onto the field, and then reassemble it. Crazy assed shit…
