I was so sure he would make it, but I just can’t see it now.
Game 2 was the game to get him the reps and he barely got the quality reps he would have needed to earn his spot.
Westbrooks got every rep outside opposite Sims early when it mattered and Sam didn’t get any until the 3rd quarter, unless I missed something.
It’s not that Sam didn’t play. He got a sack and nearly got a 2nd on an inside rip move that was sweet, but he slipped just a second early and couldn’t get the QBs feet down.
Now, that probably puts Sam on the PS. Sam has certainly played well enough to earn THAT invite. But does he stay there? With a top 10 selling jersey and obvious pass rushing skills in a passing league? Sadly, yes, I think it does. Even though Michael Sam has caused and/or been the source of NO drama, the higher ups around the NFL have convinced themselves of issues which don’t exist.
That’s not to take anything away from Westbrooks who looks to be a player who’s taking advantage of every opportunity. I still say he flashes, then gets lost, but that’s why you have Coach Boo. Problem is that I’d have liked to see Sam and Westbrooks split those prime reps so that the coaches could compare apples to apples. Instead, you’ve got both guys with production, but Westbrooks is going to get a bump because of going against the better group, something Sam can’t address.
Now, it’s always possible that they keep both and dump Carrington who’s shown nothing, but I highly doubt that.
As it stands, unless something radically changes, I think we’re looking at Sam on the PS. Which I like in one way because I like his talent and want him to stay a Ram and to continue to develop under Coach Boo. That said, there’s absolutely no damn reason he shouldn’t be playing on Sundays and if Sam hits the waiver wire, teams should be lined up to claim him and I sincerely doubt any teams will. Notta one…
Good for the Rams, but bad for the NFL.
