I wanted to determine what the hell I am, since my dad was adopted. Tried doing a family tree through Ancestry but hit a dead ends everywhere. My bio-grandpa had an Irish surname and bio-grandma’s got a Norwegian one, so I figured there’d be a lot of fish and chips in the mix. Here are the surprising results:

1% European Jewish. My Jewish FB friends thought this was a hoot. “Welcome to the tribe, Jew boy!” one did say.
    1% Central Asian. Possible Taliban.
    1% Italian\Greek.
4% Irish. St. Paddy’s Day is still real for me and I can still drink like a fish 4% of the time.
    12% Scandinavian. A shocker.
17% Western European. A French Nazi. Curses.

    And the shocker…

64% UK. Most likely a lot of Scot. And my middle name is Scott. My mother’s maiden name is Scottish.

    And I loathe Scotch.

A bloody Redcoat. Who’d have thought? My MIL, an Englishwoman, thought it was a hoot.

I hate scotch too. My family tree is easy since my great aunt did all the researching which she said was only very reliable back to 1840. Somewhat reliable back to 1760. After that the record keeping wasn’t detailed enough to try though at some point the Huns could be represented. Otherwise it is Slovakian, Croatian and German in that order. My family loves a good fight.

Well here’s the consolation. You can identify as Scottish, who had many wars with the English, some of which they won (partly).

A true redcoat is English. So if you drift in the Scots direction, you are not a redcoat.

Scotland just had a vote and they went English. So he’s as limey as the rest of them. Sorry O3.

    No the Scottish aren’t English.

Scotland agreed that they, along with Wales and England, are British.

    Not the same thing.

You are so wrong. William Wallace agrees with me.

William Wallace was right. About Edward I, in the 13th century.

But! When Scotland joined Great Britain in the Act of Union of 1707, it was a voluntary merger and not a conquest.

When they re-affirmed it in 2014, it was to voluntarily stay a merged state, the UK. That does not make the Scottish English any more than it makes the Welsh Scottish. It just means that the 3 nations all belong to the UK.

Didn’t need the history lesson as I already knew it. That is why I used the term “limey”. I used Wallace since I believe if he was alive in the 1770s he would have been banished to the American colonies and viewed all serving the king as limeys.

I;m just playing around with history now. Wallace wouldn’t have had a beef in the 1770s. Edward I was bent on conquest. In 1770, in contrast, the big Scottish complaints were with other Scots. There were the earlier jacobite wars but those are a different deal and were actually opposed by many Scots…and independence was not an issue.

BTW I thought Mel Gibson distorted the Wallace story beyond recognition.

I’m done on this topic though. I was just having some fun with Ozone. Didn’t mean to get sidetracked.

The Scots, Welsh, Irish and Manx are Celtic peoples. While there are (especially) recent reevaluations going on about them, they are definitely distinct from the Angles, Saxons and Jutes who made up the “English.” The English basically destroyed Celtic dominance in “Britain,” and dispersed it to the West and North, especially.

At one time, the Celts roamed across most of Europe, and dominated large swaths. Surprisingly, they once had a strong presence in Italy and sacked Rome before the Romans became a great power. Centuries later, Julius Caesar got his revenge, coming close to wiping out the Celts in Gaul — which seemed to be his desire. Full scale genocide.

Fascinating book on the Celts is The Discovery of Middle Earth, by Graham Robb. It’s amazing how advanced they were in the sciences of their day. The druids, from what we know, were great astronomers, among a host of other skill sets.

(I’m mostly Celtic. Irish, Scottish and Spanish. Would love to see how it all breaks down, though. Need to take that DNA test.)

You can order the test through Ancestry. It’s about $90 and takes 6-8 weeks.

Limey. Never even considered that. Bloody Hell.

    Thanks, Ozone.

It sounds fascinating. And I was expecting a much bigger price tag.
