They were way too eager to sign Foles to that contract. They should have been smarter than that. What was the rush?
IMO? I agree with what they did. AND the contract is just not that bad.
Last summer, seems to me, they faced 2 possible “poisons.”
Poison #1 was that they didn’t extend him, and he played well, and was a free agent, and therefore deserved “young starting qb in his 2nd contract” money, which is around 16-18 M a year.
Poison #2 was that they did extend him, and he flopped, in which case they are on the books for him at about 8 M for 2016 whether they cut/trade him or not.
Of the 2 poisons, I would always take #2 as the lesser one. Wrap him up as a bargain (for starter’s money) rather than having to face paying him more down the line.
So I get the reasoning.
