Today, about 1,000 Carrier workers and their families should be rejoicing. But the rest of our nation’s workers should be very nervous.
President-elect Donald Trump will reportedly announce a deal with United Technologies, the corporation that owns Carrier, that keeps less than 1,000 of the 2,100 jobs in America that were previously scheduled to be transferred to Mexico. Let’s be clear: It is not good enough to save some of these jobs. Trump made a promise that he would save all of these jobs, and we cannot rest until an ironclad contract is signed to ensure that all of these workers are able to continue working in Indiana without having their pay or benefits slashed.
In exchange for allowing United Technologies to continue to offshore more than 1,000 jobs, Trump will reportedly give the company tax and regulatory favors that the corporation has sought. Just a short few months ago, Trump was pledging to force United Technologies to “pay a damn tax.” He was insisting on very steep tariffs for companies like Carrier that left the United States and wanted to sell their foreign-made products back in the United States. Instead of a damn tax, the company will be rewarded with a damn tax cut. Wow! How’s that for standing up to corporate greed? How’s that for punishing corporations that shut down in the United States and move abroad?
In essence, United Technologies took Trump hostage and won. And that should send a shock wave of fear through all workers across the country….
December 1, 2016 at 2:43 pm #59943bnwBlockedWith just the Ford phone call and the 1000 Carrier jobs saved Trump has already done more to save US jobs than Obama has in his 8 years in office. Don’t give up on that 35% tariff since this country needs it bad. Jobs its always about jobs. He delivers or he doesn’t. No gray area exists for Trump supporters on this. This country has to get back to work.

December 1, 2016 at 4:02 pm #59949bnwBlockedHildabeast better get that pardon from Obama. Sessions isn’t Trump. Imagine a non political Dept. of Justice. So refreshing. The wall will be built where appropriate and Mexico will pay for it. Obamacare is toast.
I’ve always had a different opinion about Trump’s comments about Hildabeast. Those comments were his. They are not law. Sessions will have a free hand and will follow the appropriate path as allowed by law. I see Trump’s comments as simultaneously removing himself from charges of partisan attack while throwing the ball to Obama to give her a pardon. If Obama gives her a pardon Trump can say he wasn’t threatening any legal action. Trump can also say why the pardon given if she is innocent? Obama can’t risk not issuing Hildabeast and co-conspirators their pardons because he himself is proven to be as guilty as well. While playing at president for 8 years he does know enough to cover his ass. Yes despite the overwhelming evidence of his lying to the american people, he is that crass. Trump boxed him in well. Obama now has 7 weeks to give pardons for those involved that can implicate him. He can work those pardons in among all those of drug dealers he’s been so busy with while he plays golf and tours the world claiming he isn’t a failed president.

Well, he isn’t keeping his promises because he failed to keep the promise that all the others depend upon: draining the swamp. You don’t bring in Insiders to revolutionize the status quo.
Since he brought in insiders, there is no way he is going to do much of anything outside the box except some stuff for showbiz. The areas where he is capable of changing things (i.e.causing significant damage) are areas where he didn’t make any real promises in the first place: SCOUTUS, EPA, etc. But he isn’t going to do the big three.

NExt election might be really interesting. If an ‘actual’ progressive runs against the Billionaire with a four year record — should be interesting. One wonders, btw, who the MSM would support in a race between an incumbent Billionaire-Republican and a Bernie-type-Progressive ?
Trump wont be able to run as an ‘outsider’ next time.

vI am also curious to see if Trump will get a challenge in the primary, like Carter did. That will depend on his popularity in three years, I suppose.

I’ll probably regret this but honestly, I’m curious. Can Obama pardon someone for a crime they haven’t been convicted of? Or even charged with? How does that work? Never heard of it. And if she is convicted AFTER Obama leaves office–Obama would no longer have authority to pardon her–would he? I’m not exactly sure what you mean.

Yes the Ford pardon of Nixon set the precedent. He was pardoned for all crimes related to Watergate that would be charged in the future. Power to pardon rests solely with the sitting president.

Draining doesn’t have to mean instant change. It can mean steady reduction. Killing the culture of corruption is dependent upon current actions that have immediate and future positive effects. Employing a few swamp creatures to further the goal of real systemic change doesn’t doom the initiative.
I don’t understand your statement about SCOTUS and the EPA since Trump has promised significant change for the better with his SC appointees and a severe roll back of anti coal and other onerous EPA regs. Both will happen. GUARANTEED.

He said things about them.
They weren’t central. They were not emphasized like the wall, hillary, and the ACA.

I wonder if Obama will pardon Trump for all the future-crimes he will perpetrate.
Every President goes to war against the poor, and commits war crimes along the way. So maybe every outgoing president should just go ahead and pardon the incoming President for their future-crimes. Ya know. Just to make it all official.
I’m also wondering if Obama will pardon Jeff Fisher for what he’s done for the last five years. 🙂

Can’t do it because the pardon has to be specific. Obama should be sweating that he can’t pardon himself.

I mean, you’re free if you’re a white male evangelical Christian.
But…wait…
If a few more state houses go Republican… you think Mike Pence won’t work with Paul Ryan and Mitch McConnell to use the Nuclear option in the Senate to eliminate the filibuster and then start passing and ratifying Amendments to the Constitution that MOST Americans actually don’t want, but thanks to gerrymandering, corrupt Dems and hard right evangelical Christian Republicans… we could easily see…
An Amendment criminalizing homosexuality. Not just gay marriage…but homosexuality en toto. Those statements are already on the table and we’re only a few state houses away from this being a reality.
An Amendment enshrining the permanent lack of privacy. Forever. Domestic spying will become not only the norm, but we’ll have gone from “we have privacy” to “if you have nothing to hide…” Habeas Corpus is already becoming a distant memory…
An Amendment which establishes that America is a Christian nation. Yep. That’s coming. BELIEVE IT.
I also expect everything just south of an amendment enabling the expansion of coal, oil and nuclear power with subsidies. Even as the problems with all of these continue to become more evident…and the business case for each becomes more tenuous in the changing economy (the economic case for innovation used to not just reside in Silicon Valley)… and the social and environmental costs are born including potential disasters (we have old nuclear power plants near major population centers. Indian River Nuclear Power plant is near NYC AND is near a fault line, so when the Trump federal gov’t forces through national fracking as is likely… Indian River isn’t capable of handling even a 5.0 earthquake. And it’s the same design as Fukushima….and NYC is within the fallout radius. What could go wrong?

It’s being made abundantly clear that through shrewd political gamesmanship, this minority viewpoint will be attempted to be made manifest.
Based on the last few weeks and how the Dems are looking to corporatists Corey Booker and Kristen Gillibrand, two massive corporate hacks and basically an Obama and a Hillary doppleganger, respectively, I have little hope that there will be any progress in the 2018 elections. And the MSM will still be scratching their heads… “how can this be happening???”
What if I want to live with atheists? Gays? Lesbians? Transgendered people? Muslims? Hebrews? Hindus? Buddhists? Disabled (other than myself)? Black people? Hispanic people? Asian people? Middle-Eastern people (Arab, Semitic, etc)? What if I WANT to live in a diverse country that CELEBRATES that diversity?
I thought that is what America stood for. I thought that is what America, ultimately, after all the crap was washed off was about.
So, when the White Christian Caliphate legislation stuff starts coming…and it will… are those who are going to say that this post is an overreaction going to stand up and fight against it?
Or is everyone supposed to magically become evangelical white males?

Well keep on calling the opposition racists, homophobes, deplorables, irredeemables etc. and see how that continues to work politically for you. BTW I’m not an “evangelical” white male. I’m Roman Catholic. Don’t have to be white or male or “evangelical” to share similar beliefs on this stuff and it isn’t as monolithic as you believe. Perhaps Obama can import enough Islamists in his final days to help solidify the voting block for the future?
No way the amendment enshrining the lack of privacy would ever be passed. Too many disparate groups would find common cause. Snowden and Binney have been very effective at getting the message out.
No way an amendment proclaiming America is a christian nation is passed with any teeth to it. In name only, perhaps, but the opposition would be fierce and galvanized over a pyrrhic victory at best.
Seriously doubt an amendment requiring oil, coal, nuclear etc. but guarantee the expansion will be great at least for oil and coal. So great that it will be impossible economically to do what Obama did to our electricity providers ever again. The public will refuse to bear such costs again. Such costs will prevent the economic expansion necessary to Make America Great Again.
If you want to live with those people then you’ll still be in luck right here in the good ole USA. They’re not going anywhere and everyone knows it. Stop acting like its 1000 AD or even 1950 AD. Again you do your cause more harm than good politically.
Nothing magical about work. Put in the time, state your case and most important of all listen to the voters. No slogans or celebrities or MSM tools blatantly lying to the people since all that is easy. In fact its so lazy as to be laughable. Its already thoroughly discredited. Trump’s victory proved that. You have to connect with the people, not the outliers of the people. If democrats can’t learn that they will quickly become inconsequential. Reelecting Pelosi as minority leader shows they haven’t learned a thing.
Rest easy as the pattern you see I don’t.

I’ve been reading Karen Armstrong’s excellent “The Battle for God” which deals with religious fundamentalism throughout history in the three major religions. I used to think we were marching backward…but we’ve kind of always been here to some degree or another. She argues that fundamentalism is a response to modernization. And while these fundamentalist forces have been there–usually there has been a moderating movement as well. But the battle has never had a really peaceful time. It is ongoing–from the Zionists vs. the traditional Jews, to the battles in Iran over sharia laws, to our own country’s problems–like the Catholics in the 1800s immigrating in and terrifying the protestants. Religion almost seems hardwired to humans as a whole. I don’t think we will ever really reach a place where we moved beyond it.
But yes—we must always be careful because if we don’t want to become a theocracy we can’t ignore it.
