1. Nissan Leaf – predicted value depreciation 48%
At the top of this list, we have the Nissan Leaf. Even though it gained a lot of attention and intrigued buyers when it was first released, it seems as though the heydays of the car are pretty much over. Being fully electric definitely piqued interest, but even with a $7,500 tax credit and recent price reductions, the Leaf is still expected to depreciate 48% after one year of ownership. That.is.insane. Now I want to know – do you own any of these vehicles?http://financebuzz.io/top-vehicles-with-terrible-resale-value-10/10

No, simply trying to let BT fulfill his personal dream of all electric transportation. Given that depreciation I would hope everyone would have the sense to buy it used.

September 20, 2016 at 6:45 pm #53441TSRFParticipantMy main concern with Hybrids and pure Electrics is what happens when it is time to scrap them? The Europeans are so concerned about lead in their electronics (RoHS), what happens when they have to start retiring these types of vehicles?
B, I think you are knowingly being unfair. Taking your argument one point beyond, if you are for big oil, you’re against clean water. Why don’t you try and live without clean water for a day or two and let us know how it goes…

Big oil? Or oil? Don’t understand your connecting either to clean water. And I don’t see the “argument” you think I’ve made.

September 20, 2016 at 7:24 pm #53447TSRFParticipantWell, wasn’t the whole point of your post that if Billy T was protesting the oil pipeline in ND, he should switch to a mode of transportation that didn’t use oil?
As in, if he is against oil, he shouldn’t be able to use oil in any form forever?
Or, as I stated in my first post, are you just trying to rile him up?
Just because the economic monster needs to be fed more and more petrochemicals, doesn’t mean we have to sit back and be OK with the environmental havoc it wreaks.

Yeah, it’s a weird combination of silly taunt, “gotcha” and trolling all in one. And it makes zero sense.
(It’s just a way to change the subject from Trump’s serial lying and corrupt business practices to me :>)
It’s not as if I’m a big advocate of electric cars. I’m not. I’d rather the government invest three trillion, give or take, in a new Manhattan project for a Green Complex, now, here, today, and facilitate the transition to an all Green economy and society, with no more fossil fuels, no more extraction and rape of the planet, no more reliance on any energy source that isn’t 100% renewable or harmless for the environment.
The two best bets for that are Solar and Wind. They don’t run out. There will be no “peak” time for either — at least not while our species is alive on this planet. There is no way to corner the market on these things, as long as we keep the tech in the public sector, etc. etc.
So, cars, trains, planes, ships — everything via solar with a wind assist if needed — and the new investment would also make sure we move to all Green farming, power grids, cleanup, protection of our shorelines, rivers, lakes, oceans and air, etc. etc.
Three trillion should do it.
If we can spend that money on the obscenely immoral and unconscionable invasion of Iraq, we can spend it making sure we no longer kill the planet.

My post was due to BT wanting this nation to switch to all electric cars. The Nissan Leaf given its huge depreciation at the end of its first year makes it at present a far more affordable option. I see Nissan Leafs every day. This thread has nothing to do with oil or clean water IMHO.

Problem is, bnw, I never said we should do that. Not sure where you got that from. Again, I want Solar cars, not plugins.
That said, if your post was innocent and just an attempt to inform, apologies.

I originally closed this thread because of this kind of antagonism.
But bnw asked me in a private chat exchange (which regrettably I did not see for a couple of days) to go back and give this another look.
My view today–I was too heavy-handed. It wasn’t an out of control conversation, it just had (rules-violating) bits in it. I now think it didn’t warrant closing. It was more “mod states a warning” level.
Plus it also included, in the end, this:
if your post was innocent and just an attempt to inform, apologies.
Which I didn’t originally account for. It was good that bnw asked me to reconsider. That’s how it should go.
…
September 26, 2016 at 10:18 am #53885Billy_TParticipantZN,
I stand by that quote, too. If I rushed to judgment, I apologize. It may well be bnw just wanted to let me know of an alternative kind of car. That kind of exchange is more than welcome.
That said, I also wanted to correct the record. I’m not an advocate for an all-electric fleet, etc. etc. I actually want us to go to all solar cars, that bypass the need for any kind of “charging” via electric outlet. To me, that should be our goal.
Solar and wind are literally “renewable” in ways that other alternatives simply can’t be. The use of water, for instance, even if done in a “green” manner, is going to have some negative impact on the environment and deplete a precious resource. I’d much rather we focus on sources that can’t be depleted and don’t have to be extracted, etc. etc.
