Yes–I bought an original Rubiks Cube–a 3X3(Three blocks wide and long). I had one of these years ago and got nowhere. But I was fiddling around on YouTube and found all these puzzle geeks doing these blocks. Well–there is the regular boring Rubiks and then they have 4X4s &X&s 17X17s, shapeshifter ones a Pentaminx and all sorts of others. Well, I thought–if these guys can do these unbelievably complicated ones–surely I can do a simple 3X3. Besides–as I age I think mental challenges are good.
Well–my daughter sees me toying with it and asks why one earth I’m messing with it. “I’m not climbing a mountain at this age,” I tell her–so you know–goals and so forth.
So I set my mind to this thing–and of course quickly went to their website where after three days of hints and instruction I was able to finish the damned thing.
But it’s not important that I could not figure out the algorithms by myself. It’s important that I finished the cube! Doesn’t matter how you get there–just get there. I’m sure I’ll get better with time as I work myself up to the Petaminx. Or maybe not.
Here’s a guy who recorded himself for 8 hours doing this petaminx thing. In case you guys want to give it a shot.

If it makes you feel any better–most people will only ever solve one side. You pretty much NEED the solving guide to help you. According to Rubiks there are 42 quintillion possibilities but only ONE solution.
There’s certain order in which things are solved and each side is the color of the center cube of a particular side because that cube never moves. You have to remember that when solving ends and corners.
Anyway–it was fun to go through it.

December 30, 2015 at 6:17 am #36293AgamemnonParticipantIt took me 20 hours over a week. That was good because that was all the time I was going to put in on it. I did it at work during down time. It was original and it isn’t the way the books say. The best thing about it was it works for the cubes that have symbols along with the colors and it works for more the 3 sides. It isn’t the fastest way, but it is a more general solution and I didn’t read any solutions until I had a solution.
No matter what series of moves you make, if you repeat them, they will eventually return to the original position. I didn’t prove the theory, but it worked on everything I did.
Then it is a matter of efficiently finding the patterns that you need to solve the type of cube that is scrambled.

Somehow, Ag, I would have expected that of you.
I can’t draw a tic, tac, toe box much less solve these things without help–and even WITH help it isn’t easy. Trying to remember the sequence to get to a particular state requires a lot more mental activity than I seem to have–so I have to refer to the guide and I’ll still turn something the wrong way once in awhile and have to start over.
I can solve the white square every time though–that’s pretty easy–but flipping it and doing the middle part requires eight moves and I just get lost.
I am amazed by anyone who can figure these things out though. It isn’t easy for all of us.
It’s always interesting to me though–whenever I bang up against a wall of the limits of my intelligence. It’s an odd feeling. I think of someone like Einstein as a superhero in that regard. I don’t have those powers. But I respect those who do.
