Just not feelin’ it. Not anti-Goff, but not drinking the Kool-Aid and not believing the hype.

I’ve got a critical take that I think is well founded and grounded, but I dunno that there’s anywhere for it…

I really can’t stomach the unbridled faith in Fisher…

I’m not sure if I’m supposed to just take a sabbatical until it’s okay to be critical or what because no one seems to want to hear it right now…

I am with you on Wentz, Mac.

It’s not really so much Wentz as the reality that Fisher isn’t going to change.

Moreover, other than Brees and Sean Payton in NO, there’s been NO examples of a Franchise QB running a WCO who’s a pocket passer. I mean, other than a HoF QB outlier with a genius innovator of the WCO in Payton. There’s been some good to average guys, but no Franchise guys. All of the Franchise QBs running the WCO who were successful were guys who could create outside of the pocket.

Young, Favre, Elway, Wilson. Especially as the last few years have played out, the ONLY reason why Seattle’s WCO works is Wilson. Without him creating outside the pocket, this division slams the WCO. Moreover, even with a HoF QB, this division has been downright rude to New Orleans the last few years.

I liked Wentz because I knew Fisher wasn’t going to change and Wentz could do some of the things Wilson does. Goff is still a better pure passer.

That said, if Sean Payton were our HC tomorrow, I’d say that Goff was the better pick because he knows how to work with a pocket passer in a WCO.

I like Wentz for other reasons including his relentlessness. I think he’ll be a good one, but for the Rams, it was more a function of Fisher’s failings than the merits of either QB.

    Sad, but true.

Sports is the crucible of human virtue. The distillate remains are human vice.

Jim Hart ran Air Coryell as a pure pocket passer. Same for Dan Fouts.

The upside to being a Rams fan is heartbreak.

    Sprinkles are for winners.

i agree. i liked wentz more because of his ability to create more outside the pocket.

goff can do some of that but is not nearly as good as wentz.

although. one thing i have reservations about is his tendency to get hurt. he’s gonna have to temper his style a little cuz the defenders are only going to get bigger and faster. not just in college but he got hurt his junior year in high school preventing him from playing qb.

    It’s just the classic distinction.

I’ve done the numbers on this before, but, as a rule a pocket passer who makes quick throws has a lower sack percentage than a mobile qb who runs out of the pocket.

There’s a sports science vid here somewhere that shows Goff’s release (time from cocking/throwing to ball gone) is quicker than Brady’s.

That’s one of the things they like about him, if you listen to Snead and Fisher on Goff.

I like Wentz too but they put their money on the quick release qb with the superior pocket presence, and that’s just not a bad bet.

Snisher must have confidence in the O line. I hope Gurley gets good at blocking ASAP.

yeah. i believe that which is one reason i think wentz is going to have to temper his style.

i think he will have a tendency to get nicked up if he doesn’t.

i think though that mack also brings up an interesting point in how fisher will do with a pocket passer in the nfc west. does a fisher offense need that extra dimension to be successful? i don’t know.

i do know that when fisher had bradford, jackson, and amendola healthy the rams offense looked good. and that was against nfc west defenses. problem is he’s rarely had that luxury.

my guess is with a healthy goff, gurley, and if cooper can fill the slot receiver role. they can replicate what bradford, jackson, and amendola did.

but that remains to be seen and arizona meanwhile has gotten even better on defense.

I assume Fisher/Boras will protect Goff the first year,
by simplifying things as much as possible,
and by looking at what Goff does well, and letting him to ‘that’.

Which means, we’ll probably see a Patriot type passing game. Lightning quick passes. Short passes. Which means Tavon will be featured, I would think. And of course we’ll see a lot of Gurley. But maybe not as much as some people think. And maybe they throw to Gurley as much as run him.

One would think gurley and tavon will be decoys a lot, too.

They need a third reliable weapon, of course, to state the obvious.
Will it be the new TE? Cooper? Kendricks? I dunno. But they need a third reliable weapon, or they will sputter.

We may see a lot of dinking and dunking, I’m afraid. Dunno.

and actually against az and seattle last year they won 3 of 4 games. they need to find a receiver this year for goff. a safety blanket. i’m wondering now if cooper can be that guy. if he can then rams could be ok.

but again i do wonder if the rams would be better off with a guy who can use his legs more.

then again there’s always a tradeoff.
