A tough night dumped a bucket of cold water on Rams fans. I’m still optimistic. I understand why people are disappointed after tonight, but I don’t think it was a disaster. That one pass was a disaster, but from my vantage point, Goff made the right read on every throw. Also, that first completion to Woods was a thing of beauty. Goff went all the way across the field with his reads and found Woods with accuracy and precise timing.
Goff looked great at the start. I think he would have worked his way through the struggles if we kept him in the game. Frankly, I think Goff making the right reads is more promising than one awful duck is concerning. But that’s just my opinion.
The fumble sucks. Goff fumbled 5 times on 26 sacks last year. Drew Brees fumbled 5 times on 27 sacks last year. Sometimes, a defensive player just makes a great play. I would like to see Goff protect the ball better, but that will come with experience.
Goff made two very inaccurate throws after the fumble. However, his decisions and reads were smart and correct. His first four passes were perfect reads. His fifth pass was a throwaway. It appeared to be the right decision to me. The sixth pass was the fumble. I don’t know where he planned to go with the ball, but Hav didn’t give him a chance. His seventh pass was the INT. It was a bad throw, but the right read (Watkins was open on the dig). I think it slipped as he was releasing it. Sammy looked open on a dig. The ball just looked like it came out wrong. I guess it slipped out? It didn’t look like a clean throw.
His eighth pass was a quick out. He airmailed it past Higbee, but the play was there. I think it was an inaccurate ball, but I couldn’t tell if there was some sort of miscommunication or timing issue. His ninth pass was the play where he got clocked. He checked down to Woods. It was a safe throw.
I didn’t see any bad reads tonight from Goff. That would have concerned me much more than the duck he threw.
Whitworth finishes plays. I hope that becomes infectious. Havenstein just keeps getting blown back. I wish he’d hold his ground better.

Yeah, Goff’s eyes were focused downfield as they should be but he needs to develop that timer in his head that tells him to get rid of the ball.

Brown had a screw up too. But besides that I thought the offensive line played ok to good.

Yeah, I agree with that. The Chargers have great talent on both sides of the ball. Rivers made it look easy against what was essentially the second team defense. Goff and the Rams started off well against their first team defense but then the turnovers happened and the wheels came off.
I hear the worry about Goff, and I understand it. Much of it is of the ridiculous “he’s a bust” variety (not here, of course). But we knew coming into the season that he wasn’t a finished product. He’s a QB from a spread offense who has a lot to learn about the NFL game. His development may have even been hampered by last year’s staff. I think he’s getting proper instruction now and his play through most of the preseason has been a reflection of that. He’s improved.
But he’s still raw and will have his ups and downs. I just think we should have realistic expectations as far as he’s concerned. He’s going to have some bad games. When he does let’s not light the tiki torches and march on the Coliseum.

I’m pretty glad I waited until the next day to write this one up … as a “glass half full” guy I sometimes need 24 hours of perspective.
This was a weird PS game. My expectations were thrown multiple times, and so few starters played, that I had to really work around what I saw and have some faith in the coaching staff.
The Good
1) Malcolm Brown and Justin Davis top this list. If Gurley has issues or gets injured, I’m thinking we’re in capable hands.
2) Josh Reynolds … I am giving him a mulligan on the ball coming out of the sun. Until they play in the coliseum more they’re not going to know where it’s going to be. Holding onto that hit from McCoil (Who I loved coming out of Tulsa) and then a few plays later beating someone deep … that’s what I know from Texas A and M from him.
3) Eldrenkamp. I know it’s weird to put him here, but I keyed on him this game and was really happy with his play. He seemed to move with ease and have light feet, but then arrive with a solid foundation.
4) Casey Sayles. I was watching Omarius Bryant, and so of course Sayles had multiple stuffs during that time frame. I don’t know if he makes the roster, but I hope he sticks on the PS.
5) Very few penalties. I remember the years with Fisher in the PS … flag festivals.
6) The Playcalling the first drive …
7) Goff’s pass to Brown under pressure.
8) Jordan … I don’t know how Webster starts over him with so few preseason reps. He engages with strength with those long arms and arrives angry … I’m a fan.
9) Josh Forrest has played well enough to start above Littleton IMO. I’d have him as the primary backup ILB.
10) Isaiah johnson has had a good PS … he’s not spectacular, but solid. I haven’t keyed on his STeams so if anyone has info there I’d love to hear it. Because we have 2 cover safeties we can and will likely keep 5 I’d think.
11) Another solid outing from McRoberts.
12) Best showing for Woods so far.
13) Hatfield’s aggro INT. I’ll remember his name now.
The Bad
14) Jamon Brown heads this list … I can’t believe Wichmann hasn’t beaten him out.
15) Countess … all game got beat.
16) Cooper’s gator arms when Jatavis Brown was about to light him up.
17) Joyner … did he not know he was guarding a speedster?
18) The ball Jared threw. I don’t know if it came out of his hand wrong, or if someone wasn’t in the right spot. Or both.
19) The Ball security when you have Bosa bearing down on you. You have to know one of the best in the biz is coming at you … at least enough to protect the possession in scoring range. I’m not going to dismiss the good things he did because he had a rough game or get all negative … as I’ve been watching him since he was a freshman at Cal.
20) Mannion staring down receivers. He’s a backup. He’s not a bad backup … but if he stares down receivers in the regular season should something happen to Goff it’s going to be pick 6 city.

I thought Cooper made some good tuff catches. I will have to find that play.

Staring down WRs is getting to be a pet peeve of mine. I don’t see it. I see Mannion going with his first read. I see him throwing into tighter windows, but that is ok. Nothing wrong with that. I don’t see a slow release. It seems no better or worse than any other QB. He has moved in the pocket and made plays.
.
Watch the second half of the SD game and listen to Fouts comment on Mannion’s play.
“Look how quick Mannion gets the ball out.”
“Good timing… throwing before the WR makes his break.”
“Another perfect pass.”I like his stuff, alyoshamucci. But I will have to go with what I see.

I’ve always seen that. It is true his delivery has a quirk in it, as some say. But it has never kept him from getting the ball out quick.

Mannion works on stuff. I think of him like I did Long and Laurinaitis. A player who will make himself a good player whether he gets coaching or not. Mannion used to throw some balls high because of bad mechanics and footwork. Evidently he has fixed that. I know Mannion can throw a tight spiral. And none of this takes anything away from Goff.

Mannion will throw to the deeper guy more often than ?most Qbs. Anyway he is willing to take a shot.- This reply was modified 7 years, 2 months ago by Agamemnon.
