They weren’t “elite.” But were they very good? Yes. Absolutely.

Go beyond the basic yardage stats and look what they really were:

Offensive PPG allowed: 9th
Yards/play: 14th
3rd downs: 6th
Red Zone scoring: 2nd
Yards/rush: 13th
Yards/pass: 16th
QB sack %: 13th
Turnovers: 10th

FootballOutsiders rated them the 7th best defense in 2015. Pro Football Reference 7th. And PFF had their defensive line and secondary as top 5 each in the league.

Yes other teams had injuries too. But it’s still accurate to say that the real reason they weren’t elite is losing Quinn and Ogletree. Plus having an offense leading the league in 3-and-outs and having a horrendous 3rd down conversion rate didn’t help.

1,091 snaps. 4th most in the league behind Philly, NYG and Jacksonville and 7-8 plays per game more than the league average.

Yet they were 14th in yards/play, 11th in drives ending in a score, and 18th in first downs allowed. They simply were on the field a lot more mainly due to the inept passing offense, in my opinion.

And McDonald, and playing a banged up CL and JL.

What impressed me was that in spite of the injuries a lot of depth came through. It wasn’t just Barron. There was Roberson–who I was wary of at first. Then Ayers was playing well toward the end. Alecander was more inconsistent but he did flash some stuff.

The only disappointment really (for me) was Sims disappearing.

I agree that with a healthy Ogletree and Quinn, that defense would have been pushing top 3 rankings.

If they sign all their FAs, stay healthy, and draft an all pro LB, then they can be elite. Otherwise they need the offense to score more points. imo

they were good, but i think they need to get even better. even with ogletree and quinn.

i want to see them become elite.

i guess what i’m trying to say is that even with the injuries it seemed like they were underperforming. they were good for sure but they could have been better. but i also think they’re extremely young so the potential to get better is definitely there.
