In this day and age it will always be “who talks the toughest” We live in a country where it is all about image and not about thinking beyond. It’s very simple. In the United States of America we value “toughness”. It’s why the Super Bowl draws far more interest than the World Cu[ of Soccer. Or even the World Series of baseball or even the NBA finals. (And yes Soccer can be just as toughest if not more so than soccer-but its the “image” that is what America wants-and we can thank American TV for that ).

And Trump “sounds” more tough than Biden. I can’t think of any progressive, liberal, democratic, whose image is as tough as Trump.

My answer : turn off the TV.

I think I would refine that a little bit. I think people like things narrowed down and simplified. Black and white.

Simple answers to difficult questions, and then be “tough” about that.

Reduce the extremely problematic immigration problem to simple black and white, right and wrong terms, and get tough.

Yes, the perception of strength is huge for Americans. It’s a far bigger subconscious rationale, IMO, than any conscious belief in one’s own “best interests.” In general. In the aggregate.

Humans are contradictory beings. And too many vote their “gut,” which includes their fears.

This is anecdotal, of course, but I had a convo yesterday with a neighbor, whom I like, and she told me her pastor said this (in paraphrase): “Democrats will pass bills that limit what I can teach you in church.” She believed him, and it sounds like the “flock” there does as well. Her number one reason for voting for Trump was “religious freedom,” which also included her anger at Biden’s support of abortion, as she put it.

It’s damn hard to defeat things that don’t exist, and the lies that promote the non-existent. Throw in the perception of “strength,” and it’s a hell of a tough climb.

Trump is the weakest politician I know of. Why people think he’s tough is beyond me. Zero courage. He acts tough because he’s a reality TV actor and a lousy one at that.
