I’m curious about this. As in, do coaches and staff think about holding back on showing their full range of plays, early on, or do they really game-plan according to the cliches they typically state?

“One game at a time,” etc. etc. “We’re just thinking about this week, nothing more.”

If memory serves, the Pats didn’t show the defense they used in the Super Bowl until the Super Bowl. I might be wrong about that, but that’s what I’m remembering.

With the Rams, I’m thinking if they followed suit, it would be more on the offensive side of things. To make a long story short . . . I’m hoping the absence of jumbo packages is all about that holding back, cuz I really, really want them to add this to their playbook.

Two TEs, six linemen, one wideout. Two TEs, five linemen, one wideout, a second-string DT like Smart in the backfield as FB. Stuff like that. Hand it off to him sometimes. Have him crash into the line as a blocker at other times, etc. Mix it up.

Or . . . they could just indulge me and do this all year long.

    ;>)

That’s because that D was specifically concocted to handle the Rams. It’s a case of give BB 2 weeks to game plan, and you will get something you have not seen before that was specifically crafted to beat the other team.

Same thing happened in the last Rams/Patz superbowl. What the Martz Rams got was nothing like what they expected.

So that’s not really a case of BB holding anything back during the season. He was just inventing something new. If they had played a different team in the superbowl with different strengths and weaknesses, we would have seen an entirely different defense from BB.

BTW it was the same with the Rams D. They did not play their regular D and instead relied heavily on subpackages to constantly disrupt what the Patz were doing.

In terms of the Rams, I like the idea that an offense is so adapatable that it can morph with the season.
