Todd Davis ILB … 6’1, 230, 2014 UDFA, started 15 games for Wade in 2016
Jared Crick 3/4 DE … 6’4, 285, 2012 4th round pick in Houston & played with Wade there before signing with Wade in Denver in 2016, on IR in 2017 after back surgery
Billy Winn 3/4 NT/DE … 6’4, 300, 2012 6th round pick, played in all 16 games for Wade in 2016 starting twice, on IR in 2017 with a knee

Last year, with Davis starting, Denver was 3rd on defense overall and 5th against the run (yards) and 1st in yards per carry allowed. In 2016, with all Crick and Winn playing, Denver was 1st on defense, 1st against the run, and 1st in yards per carry allowed.

Denver is 17th in cap space, at just under 25 M (and that’s before signing draft picks). They may be in the market for a qb, LOT, or both. So they probably can’t afford all 3. Crick and Winn are coming off of injuries.

If the Rams can get some players that have already produced in Wade’s defense, then we aren’t just trading players for draft space and low round picks, we are making room for players that can produce.

Yes, someone like Wade Phillips can attract former players to the Rams and be a better fit for his defense. His reputation might also attract others.
I was pleased that Rams linebacker coach Joe Barry was running drills at the combine. I know that reviewing game tape is is far more important that a few drills done in shorts and a T-shirt, but it did put him closer to the group of players that we will likely be drafting.

It’s clear they will address it through a combination of in-house players and draft picks, but personally I don’t expect a big free agent signing. Having said that, 2-3 Denver defenders who played for Wade are UFAs this year, though, only 1 is a backer and 2 of them were on IR in 2017. Still if they have recovered and can play having been on IR could just make them cheap. It’s not just LB they have to address, it’s CB and NT too, so signing a Denver player or 2 on the cheap would help.

I think them trying to sign Tru is a giveaway that they would use the 1st rounder on an edge rusher. I’ve heard it said many times that Wade can come up with ILBs out of lower picks, and that he wants the money/higher picks on the outside. Though Tru wasn’t signed before because he was asking too much, so who knows.

This reminds me of the defensive rebuild in 2000. They promoted some guys (like Little), made a trade, signed a couple of guys, and drafted some guys (though not all that effectively I thought), and the result was good. They have a good core to build around in Peters, Joyner, J.Johnson, Donald, and Brockers, plus some depth that may or may not include a potential starter (like Littleton obviously).

It will be interesting to see the list of players the Rams bring in for interviews and workouts; should tell us something about which way they are headed in the draft. Linebackers, cornerbacks, defensive tackles and offensive linemen should make up the majority of the draft prospects we see. Lacking a second round pick, I assume the Rams will evaluate a lot of relative unknowns that are expected to be chosen in rounds 4-6.

Who says they will be going after players from Denver? What about other teams? I heard the Rams and CB Sam Shields are supposed to meet. He played in Green Bay.

No one says it. I was just looking at their UFAs and speculating.

I just think they could use one or 2 of those Denver guys, if they’re all healthy now.
