Here’s where the Rams officially rank right now on some defensive stats after 7 games:

    Points: 23rd
    Yards: 22nd
    Net Yrds Attempt-pass: 29th
    Yrds Attempt-run: 17th
    Sacks: 25th

If you look at just the 2 games after the bye and calculate accordingly to match other teams’ stats for the whole season so far, where would they stand?

    Points: 6th
    Yards: 8th
    Net Yrds Attempt-pass:18th
    Yrds Attempt-run: 3rd
    Sacks: 17th

Now of course that’s not definitive in any way, but just taken roughly and broadly, it indicates improvement

2 games is not a lot to judge by, but just like last year it seems the Rams stepped up after their bye.

    Here’s an example.

Before the bye, their pressure allowed rate averaged out to 29.1%.

    After the bye, it’s 10.05%.

There’s a lot of factors in that.

    * stabilizing the OL, including replacing Bruss with Dedich

    * getting Kupp and Nacua back

    * defensive improvement, which obviously helps the offense

    * the Rams just have a knack for self-scouting and adjusting at the bye…it’s a McVay thing.

After 4 weeks, the Rams ranked 31st in the NFL in defensive EPA per game. Since, they’re 8th. Yes, LA was a Top 10 defense in October. A lot has changed on that side of the ball, but the inflection point directly coincides with the return of Darious Williams

Chris Shula and his defense have arrived

When Shula’s defense repeatedly picked off the Raiders two weeks ago, it seemed like a flash in the pan performance. After Shula’s defense came away with three interceptions on Sunday, that no longer seemed to be the case.

Not only were they opportunistic, they were stout defensively, repeatedly stuffing the Seahawks’ rushing attack. This proved critical when they stopped Kenneth Walker on fourth-and-1 in the red zone in OT. The Rams won the game four plays later. That’s three straight spectacular performances for Shula’s group.

Since Rams came home from Chicago at the end of September: 4th in defensive EPA.

    Since Week 6 bye: 1st

    Defense in that stretch…
    · Points allowed: 79
    · Points scored: 22
    · Net: 14.25 ppg against

Certainly feels like the Rams defense is one year away.

I mean, they are definitely coming along this year, but they still need seasoning and a few more parts.

Lets hope Shula is the next Spags.

It’ll be interesting to see what McSnead does in the draft.   Where do they see the needs on defense.  Linebacker?  DB?

We’ll need a few more games to really tell so maybe I am getting ahead of myself. But this defense, so far, is IMO much closer than that.  The only draft needs I see for this defense are at corner. The starters at CB are okay now, but they need future starters and CB depth.

This, I am guessing, will be an offensive draft. They are not the same offense without Nacua and Kupp, and those guys have injury issues. They could also use future starters on the OL, believe it or not (Jackson isn’t signed and Hav is getting up there).

    PARAM

    Defense: 1st 4 games/ last 4 games

    Over the first 4 games:

    385.3 total yds/g
    27.0 PPG
    219.8 pass yds/g
    7 sacks
    1 Int
    165.5 rush yds/g
    33.3 atts/g
    5.0 ypc
    22/44 3rd Dn
    50%
    9 of 15 RZ
    60%
    13 TDs allowed
    6 FGs allowed
    (1-3)

    Over the last 4 games:

    335.5 total yds/g
    19.8 PPG

    231.5 pass yds/g
    14 sacks
    7 Int

    104.8 rush yds/g
    28.5 att/g
    3.7 ypc
    10 of 45 3rd Dn
    22.2%
    5 of 13 RZ
    38.5%

    8 TDs
    8 FGs
    (3-1)

Sure we played Detroit (7-1), Arizona (5-4), San Fran (4-4) and Chicago (4-4) the first 4 weeks.
But outside of Las Vegas (2-7), we played Green Bay (6-3), Minnesota (6-2) and Seattle (4-4 before we beat them). I’d say those two four game samples are compatible, if not better over the last four. We do need to keep it up but that is looking a lot better now than after the first 4 weeks.

The rushing yards per carry has improved a lot. The third down percentage and red zone percentage also. And certainly the sacks and picks have jumped way up.

Miami is a different animal. We’re not going to have 7 sacks against Tua but if we can get quick pressure we might get a pick or two. As far as stopping the run, that’s going to be a huge test too. We’ll need a stellar game to come away victorious but again, after the last 4 weeks that seems far more possible than after the first 4.

    Los Angeles Rams PR@TheLARamsPR
Since Week 6, the Rams defense has allowed just 1.57 points per drive, the third-best mark across the NFL.

The defense has also held each of their past three opponents to 20 points or fewer. Two of those three teams average more than 20 points per game this season and both rank within the top-15 across the NFL.

Since the bye, the Rams defense has averaged 18.33 points allowed per game. Pro-rated across the entire season so far, that would rank 4th.

Since the bye week, the Rams defense ranks second in EPA per play.

Chris Shula adjusting to life post Aaron Donald and the defense finding its footing was always going to take time.

They are a top-10 defense since Week 3.

I’m updating the pro-rated defensive stats from after the bye.

If you look at just the 4 games after the bye and calculate accordingly to match other teams’ stats for the whole season so far, where would they stand?

    Points: 8th
    Yards: 12th
    Net Yrds Attempt-pass: 27th
    Yrds Attempt-run: 1st
    Sacks per game: 1st
    Takeaways per game: 1st
