Daryl Henderson was the only bright spot for our team. Other than that, we played like crap. We should be embarrassed for our poor play. Hopefully, this is not a sign.

Shanahan’s game plan with Garapalo worked.
McVay has lost 3 straight to the 49ers…

October 19, 2020 at 6:02 am #123196nittany ramModeratorI sometimes wonder if the Rams WRs can consistently get open unless they are ‘schemed’ open. I don’t know that Woods and Kupp can just line up and beat someone.
I think of the two offensive “geniuses” Shanahan is the better coach.

Painful to see
Outcoached was McVay

October 19, 2020 at 8:56 am #123200znModeratorI see too much despair out there around the net. I need two losses like that before I feel that kind of despair.
Goff was off. But then also he had protection against the league’s 5th best team in terms of bringing pressure. The main issue on offense was the fact that the SF CBs limited the Rams WRs. Yet at the same time the Rams could run the ball against the league’s 5th ranked defense, 8th in terms of ypc allowed.
The Rams D was stymied but then that was against a team that was bouncing back from a horrible road loss the week before. Rams run D is always going to be an issue this year but then the Rams D also did their “limit scores in the 2nd half” number, and that makes 6 games now.
Rams always seem to have Seattle’s number. SF under Shanahan have had the Rams number. It’s just how the teams match up. I don’t think the season is over and I don’t feel the angst of this loss like some do. I think they will bounce back.

I have not given up, but I can’t think the Rams are as good I thought they were. I still think they can make the playoffs, but it is hard to believe they will do much better. The Rams have hope. Hope = some players who haven’t done much yet. A’Shawn Robinson, Terrell Lewis, Justin Hollins, Jachai Polite, Terrell Burgess.

I don’t disagree with that. The Rams are a work in progress. Going into last night I didn’t think they were a serious Super Bowl contender yet. I think they need a major upgrade at LB/DL and a WR that can really stretch the defense. Is Van Jefferson a burner? Maybe he eventually can do that. Right now I think they are exactly what they appear to be – a second tier team (playoffs but not Super Bowl material).
But losing to the 9ers is always going to sting more than losing to any other team. Especially when it’s a game you should win. It also pisses me off that Shanahan has been getting the better of McVay.
October 19, 2020 at 12:03 pm #123206Billy_TParticipantTough game to watch. The Niners cut through the Rams defense like melted butter. Far too easy for them, especially that opening drive. Side note, for me: felt sorry for Aaron Donald. A generational talent, without much help, especially via the Nose. A true space-eating hogmolly next to him would do wonders for his overall game, which is, of course, already otherworldly. A true run-stuffing maniac would just set things up for the entire D to click. I know it wasn’t their previous DC’s style, and probably not this one’s, either, but I think it’s pretty clear that their main weakness is getting gashed up the middle on running plays. The answer seems to me kinda obvious: They don’t have the personnel to stop the run up the gut, and I don’t see them scheming their way to a fix.
And, of course, the O was off. Bad drops by the usually reliable Kupp, one by Woods, and Goff was off. Just too frustrating. Poor throws, drops, so-so blocking — the latter getting better in the second half, finally.
Chicago is likely better than the Niners. The Rams are gonna have to turn this ship around, here and now.

I don’t agree with that. I think people underestimated the 9ers, especially the secondary (SF CBs were getting praise from the announcers all game–they took Woods and Kupp out of the game).
You yourself said that their OL and running attack neutralized the Rams front 7. It’s hard to “supposed to win” against that.
So how was this a game they were “supposed to win”? SF matches up well with the Rams (just as the Rams match up well with Seattle). Even without Bosa they are 5th in the league in pressures. And so on. Yeah they came off an embarassing loss but they had the horses to regroup from that.
I just don’t buy this “game you should win” thing on this game. I think that thing adds to the feelings of disappointment without adding anything real to actual analysis. Actual analysis, IMO, says that they were much more evenly matched than many of us thought in advance.

I agree with that. Forget I said “game they should win” and replace it with “game I really really wanted them to win because I am more emotionally invested in it than I am when they play, say Buffalo, for instance, given who the opponent is…”
I myself was pretty sure they were going to lose. I even predicted it in the thread about the game.
But for me that doesn’t lessen the pain of losing (now three straight) to the 9ers.

Fair enough!
October 19, 2020 at 12:52 pm #123210Eternal RamnationParticipant9ers backs against the wall intensity matched by the Rams nonchalant coast mode. You could see when they came out of the tunnel they weren’t hyped up to play no energy looking disgusted that they had to be there. Showing up at a division rivals without your A game is inexcusable. Play your best and get beat you’ll have my respect show up like last night and you lose it real quick.

I wish McVay would have come out and tried to run the ball down the 9er’s throat. The Rams seemed to run the ball well last year against them. Oh well!
Rams have done a lot of travelling so far this season. It’s not too surprising they came up a little short on some plays last night.
For me, the first half was defined by 3 plays: Deebo’s weird catch and run on the 9ers first drive, Goff’s overthrow on a wide open Kupp on the Rams first (I think?) drive, and Kittle’s big catch and run on 4th down.
