See to me, that’s what happens when you have a back-up qb behind a replacement OL.

Depending on your perspective, you can call the Rams’ 34-13 loss to the 49ers a win-win. They keep the 3 seed because the Panthers and Saints lost and will host the Falcons next weekend. If they win, they travel for a rematch against the Vikings.

rams got the 3 seed anyway.

    atlanta 17th in team dvoa.

    carolina 8th in team dvoa.

i definitely think the rams got the better matchup. haven’t really seen either team. but stats say falcons should be easier.

Agreed. Rather play the Falcants than the Panthers.

If I could tell the future, I’d say Rams win, beat the Vikings the next week, Saints win, beat the Eagles the next week, NFC Conference Championship at LA… Who knows from there.

Okay–this wasn’t REALLY a bye week but the Rams came off their bye earlier this year and blasted the Giants 51-17.

So it was kinda a bye.

But yes–I know it isn’t the Giants.

    Still–I’m looking for hopeful signs.

While watching the Falcons & Panthers, I was not impressed with the Panthers today. Atl is still scary with Julio, Ryan & Freeman on offense.

That Panthers defense is good and would have been a tough match up for the Rams, but their offense was a mess today.

While watching the game, I couldn’t help but thinking I preferred for the Rams to play Carolina.

Plus, Carolina still leaves a bad taste in my mouth after the Bradford game years ago. Beating them in the play-offs would have been sweet.

I could barely stand watching that game, and as it went on, just got more interested in all the other games.

Mannion did not impress. And I know that was a preseason game. An OL that didn’t play together, and not the starting RB or WR etc., but they had a week of practice anyhow, and there were so many dropped passes, bad passes, missed tackles…just a load of crap.

    So…on to next week.

Surprising the Rams ended up with the 3rd seed. I saw the last bit of the Bucs, and cannot believe they scored from 40+ on a 4th and 12 against the Saints. Good grief.

I fell like I ought to worry more about the Falcons because they went to the SB last year, and have talent…but I just don’t. I just don’t expect the Rams to be seriously threatened in this game.

I’ll prolly watch it anyway because what the hell else is there to do on a Saturday night in January, but….

falcons did beat the panthers, but it was a home game. now they have to go on the road.

    from football outsiders

    carolina panthers
    offense – 15th
    defense – 8th
    special teams – 6th

    atlanta falcons
    offense – 8th
    defense – 23rd
    special teams – 21st

yeah. the falcons offense is scary, but on defense and special teams they are very below average. that’s a strength on the rams. i think it’s a better matchup. the rams offense should do well against their defense especially if the special teams has a day. although yes. i realize that gz is not available. that is a problem. but if a lot of points go up, the rams defense might be the difference.

but looking at the carolina panthers, i can see the panthers defense neutralizing the rams offense. the rams defense will be less of a factor if the score remains low. and again, given how high they are ranked in special teams, they might do enough to neutralize our special teams which has more than made a difference in games.

Did Brockers play at all? From ESPN…

    • Los Angeles Rams defensive lineman Michael Brockers, who has 4.5 sacks, earns a $125,000 bonus for 5.5 sacks this season. Brockers needs one sack versus the San Francisco 49ers for the payout.

He did. I saw him a couple of times. I don’t know how much, but he was in there.

Cool deal by the Rams today. The bulk of the offensive starters are not expected to play. One will. Rodger Saffold.

Not sure Saffold did play, though. The major reason was a minor injury. Maybe he went out there long enough to count as the starter.

Pretty sure they could pay him the bonus anyway especially if they’re sitting him to rest him for the playoffs.

I think they said they ARE doing that. Saffold wasn’t mentioned by name but it was a general thing, that they said they would honor all bonuses of that kind.

They can’t. He has to play. However that is defined. Contracts are contracts, and the can of worms that would be opened up when you have other owners, the league, the players’ association, etc. just…it isn’t happening.

I don’t know…McVay said that they were going to honor incedntives even if a player had to sit out the final game.

    Gary Klein@LATimesklein
McVay said players close to reaching contract incentives who are sitting out Sunday because of coaches decision would be taken care of.

There’s also an article on it:

from Rams resting a lot of starters, but are not going to cheat them out of incentives

    Frank Schwab

    https://sports.yahoo.com/rams-resting-lot-starters-not-going-cheat-incentives-232542290.html

The Los Angeles Rams made the decision early this week that they are going to rest starters in Week 17. Many teams are facing the dilemma on whether to play or rest starters in the regular-season finale (here’s a rundown of what each team has said about whether its starters will play). The Rams also understand the business aspect of the game, and the last thing they want to do is agitate any of their players at the end of a great turnaround season.

Coach Sean McVay said Wednesday if any Rams players are close to a contract incentive and will sit in Week 17, the Rams will take care of it ….

We don’t or at least I don’t have access to Rams contracts but there could be language in there enabling them to do it . There is in my contract . There could also be a protection in their union contract

It’s really only a problem if the league objects, and I doubt they would.

BTW, according to the official gamebook, Saffold did not take a snap yesterday: http://theramshuddle.com/topic/link-to-the-sf-rams-pdf-gamebook/
