QBs don’t win comebacks by themselves (ever) but they HAVE TO come through for them to work.
it never happens all at once. and it’s probably not accurate to point to one game or another as a turning point.
but i think goff showed me something this game. it wasn’t the best or most dramatic comeback i’ve ever seen. maybe a touchdown would have been the exclamation point i was looking for.
but dang. like it’s been said. on the road against a divisional opponent with an insanely loud crowd. against a superbowl winning hof caliber qb who kept coming up with big plays. and goff came through. without cooks and kupp. knowing he needed to score because the defense kept giving up points.
and no. it wasn’t just him. incredible play by the oline. blowing up holes and keeping goff clean. gurley was gutsy. and let me be frank. i saw the replay. and he got the first down. it never should have gotten to that fourth down qb sneak. but the rams couldn’t challenge it because they had no timeouts. so i fault the coaching staff for that. it could have really bit them in the ass.
goff became more of a leader in this game i think. his teammates already believed in him. but it’s wins like these which really galvanize that belief. so calm and collected when the game was on the line. but you saw that competitiveness boil over at the end when he converted. it was good to see.
as for the defense. the rams are getting pressure from suh and donald. but in my opinion. they need someone else who can finish off plays besides those two. they can’t do it by themselves. at this point. i seriously hope peters gets over his injury. talib comes back in the last half of the season. and that ogbo can contribute just something. even as a situational pass rusher. just something please.
but more than that. the run defense was worse. i don’t know how they fix it. but they gotta fix it. 190 yards on almost 6 ypc. not acceptable. i’m officially worried.
I’ve only seen the hilites so far. Seems like they might be a bit more like the 2000 team as opposed to the 1999 team.
i don’t think this defense is quite as bad as that 2000 rams’ defense. but not quite as good as the 1999 version either.
somewhere in between.
one big difference between the 99 rams and this year’s edition is that there is no catching teams by surprise this year. there was a lot of hype building around this team from last year. and then with the offseason additions. no. teams were preparing for these rams.
so. i don’t i know how much of a difference that’s made.
football outsiders ranks the defense 9th through week 4. that’ll likely go down after this week. but they rank 23rd against the run. and i’m sure that’ll go down as well.
another thing that’s been disappointing is special teams has taken a huge hit this year. they rank 17th this year. this despite the blocked punts by littleton. my guess is gz being out and the return game being affected by injuries to cooper and then to natson hasn’t helped.
the 99 rams team had great special teams units. didn’t they have that coach who loved to run around training camp with something strapped to his back making loud noises?
anyway, that rams team was well rounded. this year. not so much.
