ogletree was highly thought of as an inside linebacker coming out of college but kind of skeptical how he’ll do at middle linebacker. he’s gonna have to toughen up a little bit.
February 19, 2016 at 4:24 pm #39265nittany ramModeratorThe Rams cut Laurinaitis so the question about his future with the Rams has been answered.
I wonder if Ogletree could slide into Laurinaitis’ vacated MLB spot as Wagoner suggests. Seems to me there’s a different skillset involved with playing MLB than OLB. I think they need to be more disciplined and need to be good at getting off blocks, whereas Ogletree freelances and usually runs around blocks. Ogletree’s a dangerous player because of his athleticism and ability to play in space. I’m not sure he’s suited for playing inside.

i wondered that myself. especially if they re-sign barron they’d then have barron, ogletree, and ayers.
for what it’s worth he DID play inside at georgia. i don’t know what that means for his prospects of playing mlb in the pros.
but laurinaitis was like a coach on this defense. not sure ogletree could fit that role.
February 19, 2016 at 7:14 pm #39293InvaderRamModeratori wonder if mcdonald maybe takes over some of that responsibility of getting the defense organized?

I feel the same. My worry: Wms had a great defense in Washington until in 2006, when he let MLB Pierce go because Wms thought he could do better. The defense was tops in 2004 and 2005, but in 2006 he ended up with a train wreck instead. Pierce meanwhile went to the Giants and was instrumental in their superbowl year.
I think GW is capable of outsmarting himself.

IMO? A safety can’t do that for a linebacker. The MLB has to do that stuff, it’s his job. Otherwise you have a safety trying to communicate with the DEs and DTs, when he has enough of a job already communicating with the other DBs.
February 20, 2016 at 3:06 pm #39355wvParticipantJL had been one of the players,
fans were split on, for a long time.
A lot of folks thought he was replaceable.I guess we are gonna find out, just
how good — or mediocre — JL was.I have no idea what to expect from
the LB unit, now.w

February 21, 2016 at 2:03 am #39380HerzogParticipantThis has mistake written all over it. Ogletree was playing at an epic level where he was at. Now he has to learn a new position.
I don’t like it one bit.
February 21, 2016 at 7:31 am #39384InvaderRamModeratorphysically ogletree can at least do the job that laurinaitis did although it’d be nice he could be more than that.
my main worry is the mental part. he was essentially an extension of the coach making sure everyone was lined up right. who handles that now that james is gone?

here’s an article on alec by matt waldman. i believe georgia was playing in a 3-4 defense during that time.
February 21, 2016 at 4:50 pm #39402bnwBlockedYes AO can replace JL at tackling at MLB. I hope he can call the defense as well or better.
The upside to being a Rams fan is heartbreak.

yeah there’s a huge leadership void in the linebacking corps. that worries me. ogletree better take this as an opportunity to step up.
February 21, 2016 at 10:37 pm #39423InvaderRamModeratorone thing about alec. he came to georgia as a safety. then switched positions to inside linebacker for two years. then moved to wil linebacker for 3 seasons in st. louis. he’s been moved around a lot and that’s had to hinder his development yet he’s still produced. some thought his best position was middle linebacker in the pros coming out of college. i’ll be interested to see how does next year.
in some ways he’s probably still somewhat of a project with all this potential. but maybe he also is able to take another step forward with all the different positions he’s played and having been in the system for several years already. should be interesting.

I’ve thought for a while JL was a weak link in the nickel (he was already off the field in the dime when Ogletree was healthy). The Rams will be faster at the second level with Tree and Barron in nickel (and base for that matter), assuming they can re-sign the latter, keeping my fingers crossed.
If the front 4 can keep blockers off Tree and Barron, those guys are going to be a sight to behold. They play McDonald like a LB, too, sometimes, and let him cheat up closer to the LOS, and he could be ready to really come into his own and become a monster. That would be three pretty athletic dudes roaming around the middle of the field.
February 22, 2016 at 11:12 am #39448PA RamParticipantYeah the whole thing is keeping blockers off of him. If that happens I think he’ll be fine.
If not–they have problems.
They obviously love Barron so someone had to move.

February 22, 2016 at 1:41 pm #39452Isiah58ParticipantI heard an interview this morning on Sirius NFL Radio with JLau. He did confirm that they are going to slide Ogletree to middle and have Barron play weak. I know that some people are worried about having two former safeties playing those positions and being too light, but I think that their athleticism will compensate for what they lack in heft and I wouldn’t be surprised if they asked Alec to put on a few pounds.
Another interesting thing that JL said is that he thought it was very important for the Rams to resign McCloud. He said that McCloud is who he communicated with and that he is the QB of the defense.
I think if they can bring most of these guys back, they are going to field a very athletic defense.

vThat is current. Of course, that will increase when they resign some of their FAs. But still, they will end up being a young team once again.
February 22, 2016 at 8:14 pm #39458InvaderRamModeratori don’t worry about the physical part with ogletree. he’s as big as laurinaitis and laurinaitis wasn’t the most physical to begin with.
i worry mostly about the mental part. and who among the linebackers is going to take over the leadership void.

Well…with Barron and O-tree out there, as a unit, they will be much faster.
J.Lau, bless his ole smart shaved head, was not fast.
