the bad and the boring…
THE BAD
Saffold, Brockers and Tru Johnson dinged today..none too seriously
Jenkins, Joyner out ditto Joseph, Laurenaitis, Barrett Jones….
Britt went dead last in wr drills at start of practice (instead of his usual top stop)and played almost exclusively with 3rd team in 7v7 and 11v11 drills…obviously Fisher wanted to bolster the 3rd team wr corp…Bailey manned Britt’s spot on 1st team and played well again
THE BORING
a fun day if you like watching the team working on their rb/te passing packages…Quick barely played….and with lots of lots of action by the 3rd team…
without Saffold and Joseph the oline looked very bad…be a quick season if we have to start Person, Washington or Bond at g
players who have caught my eye after 1 week
Bradford, Robinson , Justice Cunningham, Quick, Britt, Barnes, Benny Cunningham, Gaines, Zac Stacy, Marcus Robeson, Thaney, Olgetree, Steward, Harkey and Mayer…Donald dominates 3rd team good vs 2nd and ok vs 1’s
players who have disappointed me
Joyner, Morrell, Van Dyk, Barrett Jones, Givens, Mo Alexander, Woodard, McGee and Tre Mason
no better/no worse
Cook, McDonald, Mcleod, Daniels, Armstrong and Cody Davis…McDonald is borderline disappointing…
random thoughts
Robinson lined up at LT in position drills with 2nd unit and did well..Saffold played lt in oline vs dline drills and with the expected results vs Quinn
Sammy Brown, Westbrooks and Sims flashed in 1 v 1 oline vs dline drills…Dill Hooey and Person struggled…thought Joseph looks solid when he plays and love Rhaney’s potential
watched McGee giving Tru Johnson instructions in 11v11 drills..thought the St Louis kid Aaron Hill flashed today..a player to watch next week

Warm and rainy today. The majority of the time was a lighter workout than others. The good news is that the defense and offense swapped fields for unit drills so we got to see the defense a little closer by itself. The bad news is that this meant the 7 on 7 and 11 on 11 drills happened on the far field where it was difficult for most people to see anything.
I get a little sick of the passing game revolving around a clear and dump so often. Know what I mean? I feel like we do a lot of throwing under a defense rather than through it.
We run a 2 TE – 2 WR – 1 RB set about half of the time. In that formation we tend to see Kendrick and Cole with Quick and Austin on the first unit, then Cunningham and Bayer with Britt and Bailey backing them up.
From what I could tell, the new old alignment with Long back at LT looked like it held up pretty well…I’d say at least a little better than it looked without him.
Can you be a great quarterback if you lack the ability to buy time for a big play, only avoiding a bad one? This is what I would like to see from Sam this year. Not just being mobile enough to dump off, but having that little extra to make them pay when they pressure him.
