I took the day off to watch the first padded practice yesterday. Here are my thoughts.

    1. Got to the campus about forty-five minutes early to make sure I got a good seat. I brought an umbrella to kind of keep the sun off (I’m kinda pale-ish), so I wanted to sit in the last row so I didn’t block anyone. Sitting there, I struck up a conversation with a gentlemen who was asking me some questions about the weekend practices and so forth. He said he was only there for two days, and I asked him if he was in Orange County for business. He pointed to the field, and said “this is my business.” It turns out, he was the GM for the Toronto Argonauts doing what he described as back-checking of one of his scouts. He then pointed to Duke Williams and said how he is impressive but took plays off and that you had to keep on him. I got the impression that DW was who he came to scout, but I didn’t ask. Unfortunately, Greg Williams came over to us and told us that (unlike the previous two days) the action would be on the opposite field. So we all moved seats, and I didn’t get to talk to the gentlemen (Jim Barker) after that.

    2. As many have mentioned, the offense showed dramatic improvement on Tuesday. It wasn’t the GSOT by any means, but it was competent. Efficient. Functioning. All three QBs had good days, especially Mannion. He continues to push the ball down the field and try to make plays. I will be interested to see if he does it against Dallas on the 13th.

    3. I tried to channel my inner Jimmy Fadler by live tweeting some of the action. If you see some tweets by @LBRamsfan, that’s my twitter handle. If you are curious about some of the individual plays, I think you can find most of it there.

    4. I think Higbee is going to be very good. It is so early, but he is flashing some very good hands as well as speed and power. It may not be early because he is still learning, but I think Snead hit on this guy if he can keep his nose clean. I really like this pick.

    5. I think Thomas and Spruce had very good practices, and all of the rookies made some nice plays. Lots of passing today, so there were lots of opportunities for catches. Marquez continues to make touch catches, and Quick caught all of his opportunities as well. Tavon looks to be a major part of this offense again moving forward, as he should be. I noticed that in Jim Thomas’ chat that buried in his dreck (sorry, I know he has some fans here but I’m not one of them) is that the Rams have offered Tavon a new contract. Listening to Fisher talk about Tavon in an interview with a local station driving home after, he was effusive in his praise of what Tavon brings. I’m glad they are trying to get him signed before his walk year next year.

    6. Of course, all eyes are on Goff whenever he gets his reps. He has improved all three practices over the previous practice, and continues to throw the ball with confidence. There was one play on 11 v 11 where he found the right match-up and lofted the ball for Harkey in the back of the end zone. Harkey broke free at the last second, but the ball was just barely over-thrown. I think that with reps and a little more experience that play is a touchdown, but at least the read was correct and that is progress. He also hit Spruce with a laser that whizzed through the secondary about 30 yards on a line to hit Spruce perfectly in stride down the seam. That’s the arm talent the Rams are banking on for their future.

    7. Greg Robinson continues to have a very good camp. He is moving well and setting up against Quinn with good balance. I am not sure how much Quinn is really giving it, but I like what I’ve seen from Robinson so far.

    8. I haven’t mentioned Case very much, because he is the 40 degree day

That is to say, Keenum runs the offense smoothly, makes the plays that there is, but never makes you say “wow.” He does run the smoothest ship right now, however, and is a strong candidate to start the season. And I would be ok with that. I have read others that say if Goff can’t beat Keenum, that is a very bad sign. I disagree. Goff is not only for 2016, but 2026. Eli Manning didn’t start the first 9 games, but does anyone care about that now? I say put Goff in when he gives the Rams the best chance to win (personal editorial end).

    9. The Fisher interview was interesting as well. I think Maurice Alexander starts opposite TJ based on Fisher’s comments. I mentioned how he gushed over Tavon, and also how he felt that the defense would come back today with a vengeance against our offense. He said he wants to coach here for a long time, and expects to coach here for a long time. It wasn’t false bravado, I think he genuinely believes he is going to captain this ship going forward.

I guess that’s about all I can remember. I can’t be there today, but I will be at the scrimmage on Saturday.

The best thing for Greg Robinson right now is to go against Quinn every day. I remember Quinn got so much better after going up against Jake Long.

I actually posted some of those, in the tweets/ etc for 8/2 thread. Well done!

Very good report btw. Thanks, it’s a great pleasure reading them.

Today I will go collect all the @LBRamsfan tweets and post them here.

Tell me what the link in section 8 is supposed to be…I can help with that. When I tried to trace it I ended up with a youtube vid from The Wire. Not sure that was what you intended.

    Thanks for the report, I58.

Im recovering from a motorcycle accident, and drifting in and out of good memory comrehension of what I ve been reading.

Cant remember if anyone has written how Ogletree has looked at MLB. Anything you noticed?

NERam – I hope your recovery is going well.

Ogletree looks very spry coming back from his broken ankle. When they put the pads on yesterday, they did a lot of passing and not as much running, but there is really no room to run on this defense. Once, Gurley got the edge between Donald and a very wide Quinn and burst through the hole for a big gain, but otherwise no clean holes to run through.

Yeah, it really was supposed to be a pretty famous scene from The Wire where Stringer Bell describes something as a 40 degree day. It seemed appropriate when describing Keenum, but maybe its just my sense of humor. : )

    I will put it in.

The way to post youtube vids is just to put the url in there without any additions. Just it by itself.

Thanks. I forgot how blue that scene is. I’m ok if its not appropriate to just redact it (but it does reflect my thinking on Case Keenum) : )

We don’t have that problem here. Not with language in vids. If children read the board, we encourage them to speak that way (kidding ).

The way the rules work, there are limits on direct obscenity so no porn, not that anyone would do that.

But a scene from The Wire? It’s fine.

Do you know the vid where someone took a clip from The Wire and added a laugh track?

That was spectacular – I had never seen it. Thanks for sharing.

on higbee his main problems are staying out of trouble and staying healthy.

and i think the staying healthy problem could be a big one. he was always getting nicked up in college.

also the defense lost laurinaitis, long, and mcleod. but i’m wondering if the defense could be better than last year. biggest question mark for me is replacing mcleod, but i don’t think they miss laurinaitis or long.

NERam – I hope your recovery is going well.

    Thanks.

Broken scapula, broken clavicle and 5 broken ribs. Tell you what, I now have a huge appreciation for any QB who suffers a broken rib, and then a week later covers it up with tape and pads, and then goes out and faces an NFL Defense… It hurts me to just breathe.

    Really appreciate your reports, btw.
