Former St. Louis Rams quarterback Marc Bulger joined The Hollywood Casino Press Box on Tuesday to discuss several topics, including the multitude of concussions he and others suffered as players and the influence Mike Martz had on his career.
We typed up some talking points from the interview, which you can listen to by clicking the player below:
How many undiagnosed concussions did you have in your career?
“I’d say around (10 to 15). Obviously we’re not doctors but I think you can tell if you’ve had one.”
What was it like having one?
“Fortunately for me I was never knocked out. My worst instances…it’s really, really frustrating and scary. I would be asked what day it was…I knew it was Sunday but my mind couldn’t form the words Sunday. You know the answer and you can’t get in formed in your brain.”
Have you played games while suffering from a concussion?
“Oh sure. I think any guy who’s played in the NFL more than one or two years, I think everyone of us probably has. This is back in the days – not that long ago…I remember (former Rams RB) Brian Leonard at practice once…he went to the trainers and asked ‘Do you know where I can find a doctor.’ And that was just a practice.”
On how the NFL is handling concussions:
“They’re going the right direction. I think every guy’s different. There are guys who are more susceptible. But then you see some linebackers and fullbacks who never get them. I just don’t want them to change football too much…because that’s just part of the game.”
On concerns of having long-term health issues like CTE:
“That’s why I made a conscious decision to walk away…I played 11 years…took a lot of hits. I figured I’d rolled the dice enought. But again…I don’t want them to go overboard (in changing the rules). I don’t want them to change the game too much.”
On Mike Martz’s influence on his career:
“I got to play for a lot of coaches after he left…by far he was the offensive mind…I’ve ever been around. What he was teaching was far and away ahead of other coaches around. I can’t believe he’s not in the NFL anymore. You didn’t have one play where you didn’t have an answer. You had different reads for every coverage. He had everyone on the same page.”
