There has been a lot of buzz about him out on the net. He played late in the 4th quarter of Cleveland’s p-s game against Washington, and that stirred up more buzz. But the Browns are set at qb–Manziel, Hoyer, Grossman–and Shaw was a 4th qb, a UDFA, and expendable to them in those terms. Here’s just one example of what guys out on the net say about him:

what if we find a promising young buck like Connor Shaw (I’m a huge fan of his as a South Carolina fan and think he was criminally underrated), give him a shot at some point, when the Rams are behind (or blowing out some team), and maybe he’ll show us a lot as a rookie. Then we can possibly save a high draft pick, and if he ends up busting, we’re no worse off than we were before.
As a SC fan, I really like him. He’s mobile but not a “run-first” QB, he has won many games with long bombs, he makes quick decisions, he protects himself well, and he’s good under pressure. He’s got good “burst” speed, not a lot of wiggle but straight-line speed with good acceleration. VERY safe with the football, he may have only thrown 1 or 2 INTs his senior year.
His arm talent isn’t quite NFL-strength (but better than Clemons) though, which maybe was why he fell so low? Honestly I thought he would be one of the mid-later round draft picks.

Cut by the Browns in favor of Rex Grossman, who was subsequently cut himself. I’m not a scout. I could be wrong. But Connor Shaw does not excite me at all.

Well some other people feel the same way you guys do.

I really like Connor Shaw. He’s a freaking gamer and a hell of a competitor. He was an outstanding college QB. Very fun to watch and as tough and gritty as it gets. But that’s about where it stops.
NCAA is not the NFL. There are a ton of great college system QBs that don’t have a shot in the NFL, mostly due to arm strength or just being a college/system QB in a gimmicky/college offense. Shaw is a prime example of this.
First, Shaw has a very weak arm. NFL throws aren’t measured by how far you can throw the ball on a long arcing rainbow, everyone can do that. They want you to be able to fire the ball on a rope into a tight window 20 yards away. Shaw can’t do that. He was the weakest arm at the combine and only registered 50mph on the radar, 3mph slower than the next slowest guy. He does NOT have an NFL arm. That’s a fact.
Undersized and already injury prone. Gets nicked up a lot. He’s already had some shoulder injuries he missed time with, missed time with a couple of knee ligaments damaged and foot/ankle issues that led to surgery I think. I know he’s gritty and wants to play through everything (doesnt everyone?) but how is this not going to going to be a major issue against bigger stronger faster NFL players? Huge problem considering how aggressive he is and how willing he is to get his body completely rocked for that extra yard on 2nd and 6 in the 1st quarter. Don’t get me wrong, I love seeing that..but not from my franchise QB in the NFL.
He didn’t really play in a pro system…it was a run the ball/dink and dunk mostly with just make a quick read and throw. I remember many saying he rarely ever got past his first read would then bail and run…which would always expose his body as said above.

Rumor: I read he was as dumb as a box of rocks.
September 1, 2014 at 12:48 pm #5784HighPlainsDrifterParticipantI think I know where the “dumber than a box of rocks” came from. I think Pryor has been judged in an unduly harsh manner. I don’t think he was given the credit he deserved for his improvements as a passer when he was in college. If you watch some of his last season at Ohio State, the kid made some big time throws. He’s better when he is throwing the ball down field. He tends to short-arm the short stuff. I tend to believe that his biggest problem is that he was such a freak athletically that he was never required to learn the positional nuances. He was never required to refine his technique. He lived on his athletic superiority and his coaches let it happen. Now he’s playing a game of catch-up that he might not win. Am I advocating signing him? No. But I’m not totally against it either. Strong coaching and leadership could make all the difference, and we just happen to have a starting quarterback who will be watching from the sidelines this season who could give Pryor some much needed insight, both in the film room and on the field. But he may never take that next step. I would say at this point that the chances are much better that he won’t than he will. But, at his age, I think he might still be worth a shot. But his next one will likely be his last.
