This article in interesting on many levels. To me, it’s delusional in the sense that this writer seems to think there is some huge increase in racism and overall bigotry in the GOP, because of Trump, or that “real conservatives” oppose what the Alt-Right stands for. IMO, it’s been THE main rallying cry for “movement conservatives” from Day One — White Nationalism, basically. White fears. White paranoia, used to keep existing hierarchies in place. The “small government,” gun fetishism and the Orwellian “religious freedom” stuff are cover for (or sublimations of) underlying white supremacy and white nationalism inherent in movement conservatism . . . . which, again, is whipped up to keep the ruling class intact. Whipped up by the ruling class, for the ruling class.
That said, the writer, formerly of Breitbart, sees himself and the old guard as under threat from openly racist and xenophobic upstarts, like Trump with the aid of the new Breitbart regime. Trump’s most recent campaign shakeup is a sign of that, for the writer.
An excerpt:
But it wasn’t until March 29 that Breitbart’s full embrace of the alt-right became clear. That’s the day the site featured Yiannopoulos’s lengthy piece glorifying the alt-right. Yiannopoulos had already given interviews in which he stated that “Jews run the banks” and “Jews run the media,” dismissing anti-Semitic memes as merely “mischievous, dissident, trolly.” He wrote, along with co-author Allum Bokhari, this insane sentence: “There are many things that separate the alternative right from old-school racist skinheads (to whom they are often idiotically compared), but one thing stands out above all else: intelligence.”
And this is the cast of characters, and their enablers, to whom Trump has turned. Bannon is known, among other things, for his Sarah Palin documentary, “The Undefeated,” and his relationship with conservative patrons Rebekah and Robert Mercer. But he’s also the guy who ushered along the twisted turn at Breitbart.
If Republicans aren’t careful, he’ll inflict similar damage on their party now that he’s the top man running their standard-bearer’s campaign. If they don’t know it yet, the alt-right surely does. As one of its own, Richard Spencer, explained: “Breitbart has elective affinities with the alt-right, and the alt-right has clearly influenced Breitbart. In this way, Breitbart has acted as a ‘gateway’ to alt-right ideas and writers.” There’s now a path for this same kind of thinking to infiltrate the GOP.
August 18, 2016 at 10:08 am #51062Billy_TParticipantJust in case it’s not clear from the above:
Old guard “conservatives” are now speaking out about threats from openly racist, white supremacist groups and individuals, who gain some cover via “Alt-Right” publications like Breitbart and WND. The Southern Poverty Law Center, however, sees the Alt-Right as just racists in suits, a more “presentable” version of white supremacist groups like the KKK.
Trump seems to have created a serious split in the conservative movement, though from my pov, the old guard just isn’t being honest about its own racism, xenophobia, homophobia and misogynistic tendencies. It wants the rest of us to believe that Trump and the Alt-Right are bringing something to the GOP that wasn’t there before. It was. It’s always been there. Of course, prior to the mid-1960s, it was also heavily in play with the Democratic Party, primarily in the South. After LBJ’s passage of civil rights legislation, however, the South rapidly switched to the GOP.
Yes, Trump and the Alt-Right are far more outspoken about it, and basically have no filters when it comes to hate. But old-style movement conservatism had/has the hate too, but with filters.
It’s all beyond ugly.

Screw that “primarily” shit. There’s racists all over this country. Of every race and demographic but you only see white and south? Bussing in Boston in the ’70s comes to mind. MOVE in Philadelphia. Much more than that since. Where I believe you get it wrong is by playing the race card. This country is dividing much faster based upon class than race.

It’s glorious.
Possibly the most glorious event since the Warner to Proehl pass.
“…Donald Trump doesn’t have any surrogates in the media speaking for him because elected Republicans are too busy running away from him. A perfect example of this was Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell bending over backward to distance himself from the Republican nominee when asked about Trump’s racist rant against Judge Curiel.
The fact that Trump was able to win the Republican nomination with a non-existent campaign operation speaks volumes about the weakness of the Republican Party. Republicans now find themselves in a situation where an organization that has lost 4 of the last six presidential elections and 5 of the last six presidential popular votes is being counted on to carry Trump’s campaign…”GOP Rats Flee The Sinking Ship As Top Republicans Are Already Running Away From Trump

This is what I keep saying.
The gerrymandered districts will keep the Republicans in control of congress, of a lot of state governments, and won’t lose the Senate by much if they lose it at all. They will survive this storm.
