Chargers considering rebranding if they move to L.A.As in coming to L.A. as a clean slate, asking fans to help them pick name and logo and colors. Creating new history.
If they move, I think it’s a shrewd move. L.A. has never had it’s own NFL team, per se. It would be a chance to engage and draw in fans
December 19, 2016 at 8:35 am #61314PA RamParticipantLet’s see:
The Los Angeles Stars?
The Los Angeles Freeways?
The Los Angeles Quakes?
The Los Angeles Smogs?
This kinda sucks. I think it was terrible that the Oilers erased their history by rebranding. As a fan–I hate it. I think it sucks if the Chargers do it was well. It essentially becomes an expansion team. I know we’ve all heard the rumors before when the Rams were moving about them becoming the Stallions or some such thing. No. That’s just wrong.
Move the team. Keep the brand.

Rebranding screws over all the loyal fans in San Diego who might remain fans plus the nomads across the country who didn’t care where they played anyway. It also cuts the historical ties to all time great players like Dan Fouts and Lance Alworth.
Terrible short-sighted move.
December 19, 2016 at 9:47 am #61318InvaderRamModeratoras a fan i would have been very confused if the rams had rebranded. i don’t think it’s a good idea. it’s not even like they’re moving to another region. there are a lot of chargers fans in the southern california region. i wonder if this will turn people off. does the younger fan base care or do they gravitate to the new team they can call their own?

From Spanos’ standpoint, he’s coming into a city that already has an established team with deep historical ties to the region with a stadium that surpasses any venue on the planet. And he won’t be getting his own super stadium – he’ll have to lease office and athletic space from the established team and use his rival’s stadium. Like the Jets using the Giant’s stadium. It’s not an optimal situation for Spanos. He may feel he needs to do something that will quickly establish a competitive fanbase.
If they rebrand, they make themselves an LA team, not an existing team that just happened to relocate to LA.
Of course, it hasn’t been established that they will rebrand. It’s just a consideration at this point.
December 20, 2016 at 10:27 am #61362wvParticipantWell that is about the AWFUL-est idea I’ve heard in years.
Can you imagine how ram fans would feel if Kroenke had done
that when they moved back to LA ?Certain things are sacred. And holy. And pure.
And the chargers electric helmets and colors are one of them thingz.
The world has gone mad.

San Diego isn’t that far down the road and they will need some of those guys to make the trip for their home games.
Sure, they’re gonna lose some fans due to the move, but experience has shown us some fans will remain loyal no matter the local and with them just a hop and a skip away…will make time for the trip.
I’m not so sure they remain if the team rebrands.
I’m not so sure I would have remained a fan if the Rams rebranded when they left Cali all those years a go…and I don’t have any ties to Cali.

I can tell you I would definitely NOT remain a fan if the Rams rebranded. I probably would not remain a fan if they kept the name but got rid of the horns.
December 20, 2016 at 10:41 pm #61392bnwBlockedA new name is a great idea. Gets Spanos the opportunity to get the LA fans all in behind their new team. Would severely impact Kroenke’s bottom line for ticket sales and merchandise. I love it. Picard it.
The upside to being a Rams fan is heartbreak.
Sprinkles are for winners.

See what I mean? Why would they want to alienate these fans? I could understand a little more if it was, say a cross country move and those fans wouldn’t be spending much at the games…but this move isn’t very far and the die-hards will still make the trip IMO.
December 21, 2016 at 8:16 am #61406joemadParticipantNot a good idea to rebrand an iconic team like the Chargers. Original AFL team…and originally from LA.
On Sunday football is where we Americans congregate together, it’s our people’s religion. They pass down this team stuff generation to generation to create a bond.
I can maybe understand a rebranding if moving to a different region and conference but SD is only 2 hours away from LA, I think that they will alienate more fans than get new ones with a new logo.

Wow, just wow given the carpet bagging NFL history for Los Angelinos and St. Louisans.

Yeah, it seems short-sighted to me. Spanos must see a lot of untapped potential among the Angelinos. In other words he must think there are a bunch of LA football fans who have no real rooting interest in the Rams or Chargers right now, and he wants to capture them. He’s probably right about that but I still think it’s a mistake to screw over existing fans for fans you don’t even have yet. He could also build up/promote the existing brand to capture those fans.
December 21, 2016 at 12:25 pm #61425ZooeyModeratorI don’t think he will do it. He would lose more fans than he would gain doing that.
December 21, 2016 at 7:25 pm #61463InvaderRamModeratorthe only thing i can say is that they are obviously trying to appeal to a new generation of fans. a generation maybe people like us don’t necessarily understand.
my guess is spanos has a bunch of market researchers doing a whole lot of work on this. whatever they recommend is likely what he’ll do.

December 22, 2016 at 9:58 am #61505NewMexicoRamParticipantMaybe they should keep the Chargers moniker.
Then move back to San Diego in 21 years.
Wouldn’t be the first time we will have seen something happen like that.
