Goff’s extension kicks in in 2021. At that point they will have both him and AD with their big 2nd contracts, and maybe Ramsey too (Ramsey will be in the 20 M range).

In terms of what that means now, it makes it challenging to choose who you extend. It’s just cap space and how you fit in your big contracts. You can have too many of those, which then crowds out the number of important guys you can have on more modest, “not stars but needed good players” type contracts. It becomes just stars and then just cheap contracts with young developing players.

How many other big contracts can they have besides Goff, AD, and Ramsey? Without digging too deep into it, along with those 3, I figure they could have at most 4 other big contract guys. Past that and you might be putting too big a percentage of the cap into your stars.

So let’s say 4. But–there’s more than 4 candidates, including both guys they have signed already and also future signings. Beyond The Three there’s also Johnson, Fowler, Littleton, Brockers (though probably not), Kupp, Cooks, and Everet…plus also you have to think about Gurley. It’s quite possible that at least 3 of those guys will have to walk. Maybe more. (Fowler, for example, could be expensive.)

I see Rams fans all over the place discussing whether to keep Fowler or Littleton. It’s possible, though, that they could lose BOTH. I suppose one approach is to let guys walk if there is someone behind them. Howard is behind Littleton and the Rams love him. Is there someone behind Fowler? Maybe. (Thinking of Obo and/or Patrick).

    Can’t keep em all.

This is the world of the new “perennial winner” Rams. Good players will walk.

65% of the Cap is the most money you can invest in “stars”. Whether that is 7 people or 12 people. Remember, we worked all that out a couple years ago.

According to PFF certain positions have a large effect on winning, especially coverage players like CBs.

Okay. I sort of had that in mind…I think the Big 3 plus 4 other guys would probably be around 65% but I haven’t done the math on it. (I was sticking to a rough view here–the “without digging too deep into it” approach).

But it raises a good question. Why is 65% the limit?

Well, I did all the math and it takes about 35% of the cap for basically minimum wage vets and rookies on their first contracts. It is in here somewhere.

    top tier 12 [your best players. ?over ~6 million] 60% ~93.2M for 2016 [ ? Upper Limit ]
middle tier 12 [the rest of the starters. ?less than ~6 million] 26% ~40.4M for 2016 [ ? Lower Limit ]
    bottom tier 36 [includes IR. less than 1 million] 14.0% ~21.7M for 2016 [ Lower Limit ]
    .
I will need to check some rosters to see how this stuff fits what is actaully out there. I think the bottom tier is a limit.
All your RFAs and top draft choices[rounds 1 and 2] will be in the middle, at least ?10.
All your top and middle tier players figure to be starters.
    .
Players 1 – 12 have an average salary of 7.7M.
Players 13 – 24 have an average salary of 3.37M.
Players 25 – 60 have an average salary of 603k.
    .
    .
    The Rams top 12 at 53.8% = ~83.5 million
    The Rams middle 18 at 28.9% = ~44.9 million
    The Rams bottom 30 at 13.3% = ~20.7 million
    Rams Cap Space = 4.0% = ~6.2 million
    Total…………………. 100.0% ………. $155.3
    .
The Rams, 10 of 18 are RFAs and top draft choices[rounds 1 and 2] in the middle tier.
    .
Players 1 – 12 have an average salary of 7.0M.
Players 13 – 30 have an average salary of 2.5M.
Players 31 – 60 have an average salary of 690k
    .
The Rams have plenty of cheap young players.

    top tier 10-12 [your best players. ?over ~6 million] 72.0% ~111.8M for 2016 [ Upper Limit ]
middle tier 12-14 [the rest of the starters. ?less than ~6 million] 14.0% ~21.7M for 2016 [ Lower Limit ]

12-14 players would make an average of $1.5 million/year.
    bottom tier 36 [includes IR. less than 1 million] 14.0% ~21.7M for 2016 [ Lower Limit ]
36 players would make an average of $0.6 million/year.

One Kind of Salary Cap Model archive***

I did a lot of this using images. They have disappeared. I worked on how many cheap players I could fit on a roster to see how many star players I could have. 65% is reasonable for your star players, be it 7 or 12. imo
