Brian Quick!
I am amazed at what we are hearing about Quick. Obviously, we don’t know if his camp performance can carry over to pre-season and real games. But the accounts of his blossoming are so consistent, so pervasive, and they come from professional and amateur observers alike. And what they are observing is impact stuff.
Of course, he always showed flashes. But his mental diffidence seemed to subvert his talent. He seemed to lack competitiveness, to be debilitated by lack of confidence. He never seemed to be able to turn his physical assets into competitive advantages.
Now, guys who fail to find their competitive heart while young really don’t find it later very often. I had long decided Quick would never thrive because he lacked the confidence and heart.
Well, he seems to be finding the confidence he has always lacked. He seems to be finding a competitive edge battling with DBs. Britt’s tutelage appears to have been a big part of it all. But for Britt to have made a difference, Quick had to have been ready. If it’s all real, if he has really found himself as a competitor, man, he deserves a huge amount of credit.
And.
If, IF Quick continues to assert himself against other teams and becomes a WR Sam can trust …
Oh, baby, what a difference that will make. Of course, we also have Britt–for this year–and Steadman and Tavon. But I think that Quick offers a unique ability to transform our offense. Quick with competitive heart would offer us a young option with the combination of size, speed, and strength to assault defenses in the way that the league’s best do. We’ve never really had that. We’ve had great route runners, and Steadman is in the Ike tradition, but we’ve never had a physical stud at WR. If we did, it would make an enormous difference to Sam and to our offensive firepower. A guy like Quick has the potential to significantly alter the dynamic. He could make us lethal in the Red Zone, give us a physical deep threat, and move chains with the physicality that the best WRs have.
OK. Again, we don’t really know how much of this camp performance will carry over, will turn out to be real.
But based on what I sense and hear, A) he is showing near-elite physical skills and B) he is showing at least in practice but also consistently the competitiveness that could produce elite performance. Can’t wait to see what happens.
And I NEVER saw this coming!
By virtue of the absurd ...
