This is very cool but also horrifying.

The video shows how bacteria can quickly obtain resistance to antibiotics through an elegant demonstration. It’s just natural selection at work but it can happen quickly in bacteria where generations aren’t measured in decades but in minutes.

It has been predicted from the earliest days of antibiotics. Now what?

The upside to being a Rams fan is heartbreak.

Dunno. Most pharmaceutical companies don’t do much research into new antibiotics because there’s no money in them. This is because a given person rarely needs antibiotics and any new antibiotic will be obsolete in 20 years or so due to bacterial resistance. The carbepenems are our last line of defense and some bacteria are starting to show resistance to them.

I’ve certainly needed antibiotics at times. If we only knew more about those resistant bacteria in order to get an edge in fighting them. Like what do they want? Do they scare easily? Do they abhor bad breath? Are they racist? Do they hate exercise? Do they prefer high carbs? Are they vain? Perhaps getting one of them into therapy will reveal their weaknesses and phobias? Oh I sense a government research grant.
